Development of Eco-friendly Integrated Management Approach Against Mealy Bug, Paracoccus Marginatus in Papaya

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted at the Papaya orchard of Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS), Jamalpur to find out the appropriate management approach for controlling mealy bug in papaya. Results showed that application of Fytoclean @ 10 ml/l of water at 10 days interval after initial incidence of infestation had lowest number (3.56/5cm twig) of mealy bug. The plant treated with trunk banding with packaging tape + twice application of Fytoclean @ 10 ml/l and trunk banding + twice application of Sevin (3.0g/l of water) had statistically same number of population. The highest number (45.39/5 cm twig) of mealy bug was recorded from untreated control plant.

Objectives:

The experiment was undertaken to find out the appropriate management approach for controlling mealy bug in papaya.

Methodology:

The study was carried out at RARS, BARI, Jamalpur during October 2018 to March 2019 to find out the best management approach for controlling mealy bug in papaya. Five treatments were assigned in a RCB design with 3 replications. Treatments were T₁= Trunk banding with packaging tape, T₂= Application of Fytoclean @ 10ml/l of water at 10 days interval after initial incidence of infestation, T₃= Trunk banding with packaging tape + twice application of Fytoclean @ 10 ml/l below the banding level T₄= Trunk banding with packaging tape + twice application of Carbaryl (Sevin 85WP) @ 3.0g/l of water below the banding level and T₅= Untreated Control. Fifteen plants were selected for this study. Every plant was considered for each treatment. Fertilizers were applied as per recommendation. Spraying was done after initial incidence of insects. The number of mealy bug was counted before and after spray. Plants were sprayed five times during the study period. The collected data were calculated and mean data were analyzed statistically with MSTAT-C.

Achievement/Findings:

The lowest number (3.56) of mealy bug was recorded from the plant treated with application of Fytoclean @ 10 ml/l of water at 10 days interval after initial incidence of infestation. The plant treated with trunk banding with packaging tape + twice application of Fytoclean @ 10 ml/l below the banding level and trunk banding with packaging tape+twice application of Carbaryl (Sevin 85WP) @ 3.0g/l of water below the banding level had statistically same number of population. Maximum population (45.39) was recorded from untreated control plants. Among five treatments, application of Fytoclean is comparatively effective for controlling mealy bug as it is the horticultural soap of the potassium salt of fatty acids. It is produced by adding potassium hydroxide to fatty acids from plant oils and animal fats which are saponified by the potassium hydroxide. Fytoclean works upon contact with the insect causing cellular dehydration and resulting in eventual insect mortality. Infestation of papaya mealy bug starts from early stage of the plant. Visual observation showed that trunk banding with packaging tape can prevent the climbing of only mature mealy bugs to the papaya plant and they remained on the stem below the band and suck sap from there. On the other hand, the tiny immature stage can easily walk over the packaging tape and established successfully to the top of the plant. The findings of this study revealed that trunk banding did not prevent the plant from the infestation of papaya mealy bug successfully. Therefore, the efficacy was not satisfactory to the present study treated with trunk banding with packaging tape + twice application of Fytoclean @ 10 ml/l below the banding level and trunk banding with packaging tape + twice application of Carbaryl (Sevin 85WP) @ 3.0g/l of water below the banding level.

This study should be repeated next year after some modification of the treatment combinations. It is suggested to spray Fytoclean in the infested area, not below the banding level along with trunk banding. Another new treatment adding with sticky substances over the packaging tape can be included for the better result.
