A field Experiment was carried out to evaluate the efficacy of three insecticides and Neem leaf aqueous extract against the Sugarcane termite Odontotermes lokanandi Chatterjee and Thakur. Sugarcane variety Isd 32 was planted at the experimental farm of Setabgonj Sugar Mills Ltd., Bochagonj, Dinajpur following Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) having five treatments namely Dursban 20EC @ 750ml/hectare (T1), Admire 200SL @ 1.2Litre/hectare (T2), Spike 25WG @ 400g/hectare (T3), Neem leaf aqueous extract @ 1:10 in water (T4) and control (T5) with 4 replications. Bud damage (%), germination (%), Shoot damage (%), mean termites count per sett, no. of tiller/ha were analyzed to describe the effect of treatments. The application of the insecticides and Neem leaf aqueous extract showed that control having the highest bud damage (83.33%) and Dursban 20EC having the lowest bud damage (38.54%) were statistically different from Admire 200SL(46.88%), Spike 25WG (47.29%) and Neem leaf aqueous extract (67.29%). Regarding bud germination (%), the highest germination was in Dursban (61.45%) and the lowest was in control (16.67%) statistically different from Admire 200SL (53.13%), Spike 25WG (52.71%) and Neem leaf aqueous extract (32.71%). In case of Shoot damage (%), and mean termites count per sett, control having the highest value (30.51 % &37.25) and Dursban 20EC having the lowest (7.76% &9.75) respectively were statistically different from Admire 200SL(13.09% &15.50), Spike 25WG (14.97% &14.25) and Neem leaf aqueous extract (19.19% & 26.50). In addition, no. of tillers was the highest (67.25×103 ) in Dursban 20EC and the lowest tillering (14.00×103 ) in control. The effect of Admire 200SL and Spike 25WG did not differ significantly in case of bud damage (%), germination (%), shoot damage (%) and tillering /ha. But neem leaf aqueous extract was statistically different from all other treatments in all cases.

The present research was undertaken to evaluate the efficacy of three commercially available insecticides such as Dursban 20EC, Admire 200SL, Spike 25WG and Neem leaf aqueous extract against sugarcane termites.

Sugarcane variety Isd 32 was planted in 200 m2 area at the experimental farm of Setabgonj Sugar Mills Ltd., Bochagonj, Dinajpur following Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) using five treatments viz. Dursban 20EC @ 750ml/hectare (T1), Admire 200SL @ 1.2Litre/hectare (T2), Spike 25WG @ 400g/hectare (T3), Neem leaf aqueous extract @ 1:10 in water (T4) and control (T5) with 4 replications. The area was divided into 20 equal plots and each plot was 4 m x 2.50 m. In each plot 64 setts was planted and plants were developed with all agronomic practices. Every sett had 2 bud eyes. The insecticides were bought from insecticide dealer and neem leaf aqueous extract was prepared by boiling 1 kg neem leaves in 10 liters of water for 2 hours and then filtered through a finer cloth. The insecticides and extracts were applied in the trench using a knapsack sprayer. The percentage of bud damage was estimated at 4 weeks of plantation using following formula: % Bud damage = (Total damaged buds/total number of healthy buds) × 100. Similarly Germination percentage was estimated after 4 weeks of plantation using the formula: % Germination = (Total no. of germinated buds / Total no. of healthy buds) × 100. Then after 8 weeks of planting, percentage of shoot damage was calculated using the formula: % Shoot damage = (Total damaged shoots/Total no of healthy shoots) × 100. Number of tillers/ha were counted after 12 weeks of planting. Finally the numbers of termites per individual sett were recorded by splitting the individual affected canes selected randomly, spreading the termites on the blue paper sheet followed by counting. For statistical analysis, the collected data were analyzed using the “Analysis of variance” (ANOVA) and the significance of mean differences were adjusted by the Duncan’s New Multiple Range Test (DMRT) with the help of computer package MSTAT-C program.

Considering the effects of different treatments, Dursban was found as superior one while other treatments showed significantly better efficacy than control plots against sugarcane termite Odontotermes lokanandi. In addition it can be pointed out from the present study, Neem leaf aqueous extract might be used as a cheap approach, eco-friendly and non toxic method of termite management as it is significantly efficacious in relation to control.
