Studies on Nutrient Balance in Rice-based Cropping Patterns in Salna Silty Clay Loam Soil

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The highest yield contributing characters except number of empty grain per panicle and the highest grain and straw yields of T-Aman were recorded with treatment receiving N, P and K (70 kg N, 10 kg P and 50 kg K/ha). All the yield contributing characters and yields of grain and straw of T. Aman under wheat-fallow-T Aman cropping pattern were the least with treatment receiving P and K.

Objectives:

To estimate N. P and K inputs to soil through natural resources.
To determine nutrient removal by some major crops (rice, wheat, maize, mustard and potato) under variable nutrient management practices.
To make nutrient balance sheet under variable cropping patterns.
To estimate site specific fertilizer recommendation for rice, wheat, maize, mustard and potato.

Methodology:

Nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium are the most important essential nutrients for plant growth and development. Field experiment was conducted at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Gazipur to assess nutrient balance in rice-based cropping patterns. The test crops were T. Aman, wheat, maize, mustard and potato. Different combinations of the recommended doses of N, P and K were applied to each of the crops. The objectives of the study were to detect N, P and K deficiency, if any, in the component crops and to determine the changes in soil N, P and K fertility, plant N, P and K uptake and N, P and K balance for various rice-based cropping patterns. The experiment was conducted in split plot design placing cropping patterns in main plots and nutrient combinations in subplots.

Plant height, number of grain per ear, 1000-grain weight and grain yield of wheat were found maximum in treatment receiving recommended doses of N, P and K (100 kg N, 28 kg P and 68 kg K/ha). All the yield contributing characters and yield of wheat grain were found to be the least in treatment receiving P and K fertilizers. All the yield contributing characters and grain yield of maize were maximum with treatment receiving recommended doses of N, P and K (200 N, 52 kg P and 100 kg K/ha). The least yield and yield contributing characters were recorded with treatment receiving P and K fertilizers in absence of N. The maximum height of plant, number of primary branches per plant, number of siliqua per plant, straw and grain yields of mustard were obtained with treatment receiving recommended doses of N, P and K (98 kg N, 26 kg P and 48 kg K/ha) and all the yield contributing characters and yield of straw and grain were found to be the least with treatment receiving P and K fertilizer. The effect of nutrient management was insignificant in recording grain/siliqua. It should be mentioned that the overall yield of mustard was very low due to high rainfall during the whole growing season of the crop.

Achievement/Findings:

Treatment receiving recommended doses of N, P and K performed best in recording yield and yield contributing characters of the test crops. The lowest performance was noted with the treatment combination that lacked N. The changes of nutrient contents in the test crops and soil are being assessed through plant and soil analysis in the laboratory.
