Taxonomy and Medicinal Uses of Angiosperm Weeds in the Wheat Field of Rajshahi, Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Taxonomy and medicinal uses of angiosperm weeds in the wheat field growing throughout the Rajshahi, Bangladesh was carried out during January 2009 to December 2009. A total of 71 species under 65 genera belonging to 32 families were collected and identified. For each species scientific name, local name, phenology, family name, plant population and Voucher number have been mentioned. Twenty one (21) medicinal plants have been documented with their uses for the cure of more than 51 diseases. Out of the total number of species 42 were frequent, 27 were abundant and 2 were rare species in the study area.

Objectives:

The main objectives of this work will be detailed study on the taxonomic and medicinal aspects of the angiosperm weeds in the wheat field occurring Rajshahi, Bangladesh.

Methodology:

Assessment of angiosperm weeds in the wheat field growing throughout the Rajshahi, Bangladesh was carried out during January 2009 to December 2009. A total of 71 species under 65 genera and 32 families were collected and identified. Plant parts with either flowers or fruits collected using traditional herbarium techniques to make voucher specimens for documentation. Field identification of the collected specimens was confirmed comparing with herbarium specimens at Rajshahi University Herbarium (RUH). In some cases, standard literature such as Hooker (1961), Prain (1963), Kirtikar and Basu (1987), Rahman (2013a, 2013b, 2013c, 2013d), Rahman et al (2013a, 2013b, 2014), Cronquist (1981) and Ahmed et al (2007-2009) were consulted for identification purpose. The specimens are deposited in the Rajshahi University Herbarium (RUH) for future reference. For the current name and up to date nomenclature Huq (1986), Ahmed et al (2007-2009), and Pasha and Uddin (2013) were also consulted.

Assessment of angiosperm weeds in the wheat field of Rajshahi, Bangladesh has been studied. A total of 71 angiosperm weed species under 65 genera and 32 families were recorded. Twenty one (21) medicinal plants have been documented with their uses for the cure of more than 51 diseases, and some of these are abscess, asthma, abortion, cough, cold, small pox, constipation, dysentery, diarrhea, diabetes, eczema, fever, and fracture of bone, headache, heart disease, itches, jaundice, menstrual disease, paralysis, piles, skin diseases, snake-bite, toothache, vomiting, worm, wound and others. This detailed information will be helpful for the pharmacognosist, botanist, ethno-botanist and pharmacologist for the collection and identification of the plant for their research work and isolation of plant products benefiting human health.
