Effects of Different Management Practices on Yield and Yield Attributes of Cowpea

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field study was carried out at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Rahmatpur, Barishal to study the effect of different management practices on yield and yield attributes of cowpea. The experiment was carried out with seven different management options e.g. i) Two time spray of insecticide ii) Chemical fertilizer + two time spray iii) Weeding + Chemical fertilizer iv) Chemical fertilizer + weeding + two time spray v) Weeding vi) Weeding +two time spray vii) Chemical fertilizer viii) control under randomized complete block design with three replications . BARI Felon 1 was used as the variety. The results revealed that, combination of chemical fertilizer, weeding and spraying management options had produced the highest seed yield (1213.1 kg/ha) and yield contributing characters. Use of chemical fertilizers along with weeding practices had also demonstrated statistically identical seed yield (1102.2 kg/ha). Two times spray of insecticides rendered the highest benefit cost ratio (2.19) than other management practices.

Objectives:

To study the effect of different management practices on yield and yield attributes of cowpea.

Methodology:

The experiment was implemented at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Rahmatpur, Barishal in single factor randomized complete block design with three replications. The unit plot size was 4m x 3m. Initially, the experimental area was divided into three blocks to represent three replications. Each replication contained seven plots. Block to block and plot to plot distance was 1m and 0.5m respectively. BARI Felon 1 was selected as the variety and the sowing date was December 20. The experimental field was fertilized with @20-40-20-10 kg/ha of NPKS as basal dose where chemical fertilizers are management options. No supplemental fertilizers were applied during crop growth stages. As chemical insecticides Imitaf @0.5 ml/L was used against leaf sucking insects, first spray at 60 DAE and second spray at 100 DAE. Weed control measures were taken considering the rainfall conditions where maximum three weed control measures were taken after 45 DAE. For collecting yield contributing characters, plants from 50 cm x 30 cm area were sampled from each plot of each replication. For yield data, whole plot sample was counted. The treatments were as follows: different sowing methods e.g. ( i) Two time spray of insecticide (T₁) (ii) Chemical fertilizer + two time spray (T₂) (iii) Weeding + Chemical fertilizer (T₃) (iv) Chemical fertilizer + weeding + two time spray (T₄) (v) Weeding (T₅) vi) Weeding +two time spray (T₆) vii) Chemical fertilizer (T₇) and viii) control (T₈) . Different phenological data e.g. days required for different developmental stages were counted for different management practices. The collected data were analyzed by the statistical software R and the least significant differences were calculated at 5% level of significance (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).

Achievement/Findings:

From the above discussion, it can be concluded that, T₄ treatment combination e.g. one time spraying + weeding + chemical fertilizers gave satisfactory yield compared to other management options. Furthermore, T₃treatment e.g. combination of weeding + chemical fertilizers also produced statistically identical yield and yield contributing characters. But from profitability point of view, T₁ e.g. two times spray of insecticides is more profitable than other management practices.
