Phenology, Growth and Yield of Lentil as Influenced by Sowing Time and Seed Rate

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted at Pulses Research Centre and Regional Agricultural Research Station, Ishurdi during rabi season 2018-19 to study the effect of sowing time and seed rate on phenology, growth and yield of BARI Masur-8. The experiment was laid with four sowing dates (01 November, 15 November, 1 December, 15 December) in main plots and four seed rates (30 kg ha^-1, 35 kg ha^-1, 40 kg ha^-1and 45 kg ha^-1) in sub-plots replicated thrice in a split-plot design. Lentil sown on 01 November took 120 days from sowing to maturity, which was decreased by 20 days on 01 December and 30 days on 15 December sowings. Lentil sown on 15 November at the seed rate of 35 kg ha^-1was produced highest seed yield (3125 kg ha^-1) and the lowest yield (1417 kg ha^-1) was obtained from 30 kg ha^-1seed rate with 15 December sowing.

Objectives:

To study the effect of sowing time and seed rate on phenology, growth and yield of BARI Masur-8.

Methodology:

The field experiment was conducted at Pulses Research Centre and Regional Agricultural Research Station, Ishurdi, Pabna during rabi season 2018-19. The soils of the experimental areas belong to the High Ganges River Flood Plain (AEZ 11). The soils of the experimental plots were clay loam in texture. The experiment was laid in a split-plot design with four sowing dates (1November, 15 November, 1 December, 15 December) in main plots and four seed rates (30 kg ha^-1, 35 kg ha^-1, 40 kg ha^-1and 45 kg ha^-1) in sub-plots replicated thrice. The unit plot size was 12 m² (3 m x 4m). The lands were fertilized with 20-20-20 NPK kg N-P-K ha^-1, respectively and all the fertilizers were applied at final land preparation. Seeds of BARI Masur-8 was sown at 30 cm row spacing in experimental plots as per sowing time of various main plot treatments. One hand weeding was done at 25 days after sowing (DAS) for controlling weed. Rovral(@ 2 g L^-1) were used two time for controlling diseases at 60 DAS and 70 DAS. Data on yield contributing characters were recorded from 10 randomly selected plants from each plot and grain yield (kg ha^-1) was recorded from the whole plot. The R-software package was used for all statistical analyses. The mean differences between treatments were separated by the least significant difference (LSD) at P≤ 0.05 for the measured variables.

Achievement/Findings:

The highest seed yield was obtained from 15 November sowing at seed rate of 45 kg ha^-1and the lowest yield was obtained from 30 kg ha^-1seed rate with 15 December sowing. It should be continued for the next season for further confirmation.
