Screening of Lentil Lines Against Stemphylium Blight Under Inoculated Condition

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was carried out at Regional Pulses Research Station (RPRS), Madaripur during Rabi season of 2015-16 to select resistant lines of lentil against stemphylium blight. Results revealed that one line namely BD-3806 gave lowest (resistant) stemphylium blight disease score (1.66). The highest stemphylium disease score (3.66) was observed in the line LRIL-22-70, LT-07. However, due to higher rainfall at flowering stage the lines infected with stemphylium disease resulting low yield of the tested lines. Among the 27 lines, BD-3853 gave highest yield (400 kg/ha) and the lowest was obtained by the line BD-3825 which was 258.30 kg/ha.

Objectives:

Research for resistance to stemphylium blight in lentil is considered to be an essential part for development of a resistant variety. Therefore, the present study was undertaken to select some stemphylium blight resistant/tolerant lines of lentil.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at RPRS, Madaripur during Rabi season of 2015-16. Lentil accessions were stored at 4⁰C prior to sowing. The test entries of lentil and check BARI Masur-1 were sown on 12 November, 2015. The experiment was laid out in Lattice Design. Each test entry was planted in single row of 5 m long allowing a row to row space of 30 cm and plant to plant 05 cm. Check BARI Masur-1 was planted in every after two test entries. Intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. The experiment was monitored regularly to observe the onset of stemphylium blight disease. Disease scoring was started when the disease appeared. Total three scoring was taken at intervals of 7 days. The scoring date was 29 December, 2015, 05 January 2016 and 12 January, 2016 respectively. Data on yield and yield contributing characters were taken from 10 randomly selected plants and stemphylium blight score were recorded on 0-5 scale. The crops were harvested after maturity. Seed yield (g/line) was recorded from each line. The recorded data were analyzed statistically to find out the level of significance and the variations among the respective data through MSTAT-C.

Achievement/Findings:

All the crop characters differed significantly from one line to another. Days to flower varied from 48-73. Days to maturity varied from 83-98. The early maturity may be due deficiency of moisture in soil. % mortality varied from 15.00-40.00. The highest plant mortality (foot and root rot) (40.00%) was recorded in BD-6022 of which arcsine transformed mean value was 38.05 and lowest (15.00%) in BD-3832 with arcsine transformed mean value 22.10. The highest plant height (29.67 cm) was recorded in BD-6008 and the lowest (19.67 cm) in LT-06. The maximum (5.03) branch/plant was counted in the line BLX-09011 and minimum (1.73) in BLX-06004-12. The highest number of pods/plant (34.00) was recorded in the line BD-3832 followed by (32.67) in BD-3859 and lowest (10.33) in the BLX-09015. Maximum number of seeds/pod (1?68) was recorded in the line BD-3829 and minimum (0.86) in BLX-09015. The maximum (3.30) 100 seed weight was recorded in the line LRIL-22-70 and the lowest in BLX06004-12 (1.40). Among the lines, BD-3806 showed the lowest stemphylium blight disease score (1.66) where highest (3.6) was in LRIL-22-70 and LT-07. Among the 27 lines, BD-3853 gave highest yield (400 kg/ha) and the lowest was obtained by the line BD-3825 which was 258.30 kg/ha. Due to heavy rainfall at flowering stage many of the plants were heavily affected by stemphylium blight resulting low yield of the test lines. Distribution of lentil lines in various infection categories of stemphylium blight is recorded. Due to the higher infection of Stemphylium botryosum deserving favoring environmental condition at flowering stage many of the plants were heavily damaged. That’s why the yield was too low. But the plants that survived in the higher disease pressure of stemphylium blight could be better lines to examine next year to screen the resistant lines against stemphylium blight of lentil.
