Screening of Chickpea Germplasm Resistant to Botrytis Gray Mold (bgm)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted at Regional Pulses Research Station (RPRS), Madaripur during Rabi season of 2015-16 to find out high yielding and botrytis gray mold disease resistant variety of chickpea. Results showed that none of the test entries were resistant to BGM. There were seven germplasm (BCX 09010-2, BCX 09015-7, BCX 09010-6, BCX 08010-9, BCX 08001-3, BCX 06001-11, ICCV-98801) which showed moderately resistant reaction to the disease. The line BCX-06001-11 gave the highest seed yield (450.70g) and the lowest (90.00 g) from ICCV-92944.

Objectives:

The development of resistant cultivars would reduce the need for chemical fungicides, prevent environmental pollution and avoids the health hazards due chemical applications. In view of these, present investigation has been carried out to test the genotypes resistant to chickpea for Botrytis Gray Mold (BGM). The identified genotypes can be exploited in breeding program to develop resistant varieties.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted to explore the performance of chickpea genotypes/lines for searching of high yielding and BGM disease resistant genotypes. Twelve selected chickpea lines viz. BCX 09010-2, BCX 09015-7, BCX 09010-6, BCX 08010-9, BCX 08009-9, BCX 08001-3, BCX 08008-1, BCX 06004-10, BCX 06001-11, ICCV-92944, ICCV-98801, ICCV-93706 and check BARI Chola-5 were screened out in the trial. The experiment was laid out in lattice design with two replications. The unit plot was 6.5 m x 4 m with spacing 50 cm X 10 cm. Seeds were sown in the rows carefully by hands and covered by soils on 06 November 2015. Two weeding were done at 25 days and 45 days after sowing. Admire 200SL @ 0.05%, and Volium Flexi 300SC @ 0.05% simultaneously were sprayed 2 times for the control of thrips and pod borer. The crop was harvested after maturity. Data on yield contributing characters were recorded from 10 randomly selected plants from each plot. Data on disease severity was recorded on 1-9 rating scale (Singh D. P. and Kant L. 1999) at the time of harvest (Table 10). Seed yield (g/ha) was recorded from the whole plot. Data were analyzed statistically by using MSTAT-C.

Scoring of the genotypes for disease rating presented in Table 11. Disease rating varied from 4.33- 6.66. The highest BGM score obtained by BCX-08009-9 (6.66) and lowest in BCX-08001-3 (4.33). Seven genotypes were found moderately resistant and five along with BARI Chola-5 were susceptible. Yield and yield contributing characters of the entries are presented in Table 12. The ranges in days to flower was 73-76d. The ranges in days to maturity were 121-123d. The highest mortality (16.00%) was recorded in the line ICCV-93706 and the lowest in BCX 09015-7, BCX08001-3 and BCX-06001-11 (5.00). % mortality varied from 5.00-16.00. The highest mortality obtained in the line ICCV-93706 (16.00) whose square root transformed mean value is 4.00 and lowest in BCX-09015-7, BCX-08001-3 and BCX-06001-11 (5.00) whose square root transformed mean value is 2.24. The plant height ranged from 31.00 to 47.67 cm. The highest plant height (47.67 cm) was recorded in BCX-09015-7 and the lowest (31.00 cm) in ICCV-92944. The number of branches varied from 2.53 to 3.60. The maximum number of branches/plant (3.60) was recorded in BARI Chola-5 and minimum (2.53) was in ICCV-92944. The number of pods/plant ranged from 45.67 to 43.33. The maximum number of pods/plant (45.67) was recorded in BCX-06001-11 and the minimum (36.00) in BCX-08009-9. The number of seeds/pod varied from 1.30 to 1.71. The highest number (1.71) of seeds/pod found in ICCV-98801 and lowest (1.30) was in BCX-09010-2, BCX 09015-7 and BCX 08010-9. The 100 seeds wt. ranged from 9.33 to 13.33. The highest weight of 100 seeds (13.33 g) was recorded in BCX-08008-1and the lowest (9.33 g) in ICCV-98801. The seed yield (g/line) varied from 90.00 to 450.70. The highest seed yield (450.70 g) was recorded in BCX-06001- 11 followed by (380.00 g) in BCX-09015-7 and the lowest (90.00 g) in ICCV-92944. With the findings of the present study it could be concluded that none of the genotypes were immune or highly resistant. Seven genotype namely BCX 09010-2, BCX 09015-7, BCX 09010-6, BCX 08010-9, BCX 08001-3, BCX 06001-11, ICCV-98801 showed moderately resistant reaction to BGM of chickpea. So, these seven genotypes could be used in breeding program in next year.
