Effect of weeding on flower thrips and pod borer infestation in mungbean was studied at Pulses Research Center, Ishurdi, Pabna during kharif-I, 2016.Weeding in mungbean showed a significant effect against flower thrips and pod borer infestation. No weeding plots received less number of flower infestation by thrips than that of weeding at one or two times. On the other hand, weeding plots received less number of pod borer infestation than that of no weeding plots. So, it was seen that weeding in mungbean received lower pod borer infestation but higher flower thrips infestation and the reverse was true in case of no weeding. Weeding showed very significant effect in yield increase of mungbean. Weeding in mungbean increased up to 164.88% higher yield over no weeding plots but the higher cost of weeding failed to provide reasonable benefit (MBCR < 1). The highest benefit (MBCR 5.07) obtained from no weeding with insecticide (Imitaf 20 SL @ 0.5 ml/l) spraying followed by only single weeding at 12 days after sowing.

The present study has been taken to finding out the influence of weeding on the incidence of thrips and pod borer and its impact on yield of mungbean.

The experiment was conducted in the Pulses Research Center, Ishurdi, Pabna, Bangladesh during kharif-I 2016. The treatments were: T1 = No weeding (Untreated control), T2 = Spading with hand weeding at 12 DAS (days after sowing), T3 = Spading with hand weeding at 24 DAS, T4 = Spading with hand weeding at (12 + 24) DAS, T5 = T4 + three times spraying of insecticide (Imitaf 20 SL) and T6 = No weeding + three times spraying of insecticide (Imitaf 20 SL). The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. The treatments were randomly allotted in each block. The unit plot size was 3m x 4m with a distance of 1.5m between the plots and 1.5m between the replications. The seeds of BARI Mung-6 were sown on March 30 in rows with the spacing of 30 cm. The unit plot contains 10 rows x 4m. The plant populations were maintained constant by keeping plant to plant distance 7 cm.  Urea, triple super phosphate, muriate of potash and boric acid were applied @ 40-90-40-7.5 kg/ha during final land preparation. Imidacloprid (Imitaf 20 SL @ 0.5 ml/l) was sprayed three times first at 100% flowering (33 DAS), second at 100% pod (40 DAS) and third at seed developing stage (47 DAS) of the crop. The population data for thrips in flowers were collected before spraying and one day after spraying. Thrips population was assessed from 20 opened flowers which were randomly collected from two rows of each side of the plot avoiding border and central four rows. The collected flowers were immediately opened on the white paper board and counted the adult and immature thrips present in the flowers. Central four rows were kept undisturbed for recording yield data. At the maturity, all pods were collected from 10 randomly selected plants from central four rows of each plot and examined. The infested (bored) and total numbers of pods were counted and the per cent pod infestation was calculated.

The pods of central ten rows of each plot comprising 4.8m2 (1.2 x 4m) area were harvested. The pods were then threshed; grains were cleaned and sun dried. The grains obtained from each plot were converted into kg/ha. The experimental data were analyzed by MSTAT-C software. The per cent infestation data were transformed by square root for statistical analysis. Mean comparisons for treatment parameters were compared using Duncan’s Multiple Range Test at 5% level of significance. The marginal benefit cost ratio (MBCR) was calculated on the basis of prevailing market prices of mungbean, cost of weeding and insecticidal spraying. Marginal benefit cost ratio was calculated

From the study it is seen that weeding showed a significant effect against flower thrips and pod borer infestation as well as the yield of mungbean. Weed repels the flower thrips resulted less flower infestation in no weeding plots of mungbean than that of weeding ones. Weeding creates unfavourable microclimate for pod borer exerted less pod infestation than that of no weeding plots. Hence, it is observed that weeding favours to increase the thrips infestation in the flowers but disfavours the pod borer infestation and the reverse was true in case of no weeding plots. Weeding increases very significant percentage of yield increase (164.88%) over no weeding but could not bring reasonable benefit because of higher labourers wage of weeding. No weeding with three times spraying of imidacloprid (Imitaf 20 SL@ 0.5 ml/l) provided the highest benefit of taka more than 5 followed by one time weeding at 12 DAS.
