Development of Bio-rational Based Management Approach Against Lentil Aphid, Aphis Craccivora Koch

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Management of lentil aphid using bio-rational products was studied at Pulses Research Center, Ishurdi, Pabna during rabi 2015-16. Aphid infestation in the lentil twigs was monitored regularly in the experimental plots. But no remarkable aphid infestation was observed in the twigs. So, the treatments could not be applied and the results of effectiveness of bio-rational products against lentil aphid could not be shown.

Objectives:

The increasing concern for environmental awareness of synthetic pesticide hazards has evoked a worldwide interest in the use of pest control agents of bio and plant origin. Bio-pesticides are safer to be used in pest control program. Therefore the study has been undertaken to manage lentil aphid in non hazardous and safer way.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Pulses Research Center, Ishurdi, Pabna, Bangladesh during rabi 2015-16. Bio-rational pesticides are considered as treatments which were: T₁ = Sanitation + white sticky trap + spraying of azadiractin (Bioneem plus 1 EC) @ 1 ml/l of water, T₂ = Sanitation + white sticky trap + spraying of plenum (Pymetrozin 50 WG) @ 0.5 g/l of water, T₃ = Sanitation + white sticky trap + spraying of azadiractin (Fytomax 3 EC) @ 1 ml/l of water and T₄ = Untreated control (water spray). The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. The unit plot size was 3m X 4m with a distance of 1 m between the plots and 1.5 m between the replications. The seeds of BARI Masur-6 were sown on November 25 in rows @ 30 kg/ha. Urea, triple super phosphate and muriate of potash and boric acid fertilizers were applied @ 40-90-40-7.5 kg/ha. The crop was kept weed free by spading and hand weeding.

Aphid infestation in the twig of lentil was monitored regularly in the experimental plots. But no remarkable aphid infestation was observed in the twig in this growing season, so treatments could not be applied and that is why data based results of effectiveness of bio-rational products against lentil aphid could not be shown.We have tried to finding out the reasons why aphid is not coming in this season. We tabulated weather parameters (Table 7) and concluded that this might be happening due to prevailed lower average temperature (18-26^oC) with higher average relative humidity (73-74%) of the growing season did not invited the lentil aphid in the experimental field. It is cited that optimal development of A. craccivora is dependent on fairly specific climatic conditions, such as temperatures 24-28.5°C and around 65% RH
