Effects of Mulching on Yield and Quality of Tomato Varieties

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Hathazari, Chittagong to study the effect of different mulch materials on the yield and quality of tomato. rice husk mulch was found superior to sawdust, garden leaves and black polyethylene mulch in producing higher yield of tomato. Higher number of fruits per plant and maximum yield was recorded with rice husk which was 17.93% higher than the control (without mulch). BARI Tomato 14 in combination with rice husk produced highest yield (79.74 t/ha) highest TSS (6.67).

Objectives:

To determine the effect of various mulches on growth and yield of tomato.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted during November 2013 to March 2014 at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Hathazari, Chittagong. The soil of the experimental plot was sandy loam in texture having pH 5.4, poor in organic carbon and available N, medium in K and S, rich in P and Zn content. The treatments of the experiment comprised four mulch materials viz. sawdust (5 cm thick), garden leaves (10 cm thick), rice husk (5 cm thick) and black polyethylene (50 µ thick) with control (no mulch) and two varieties of tomato, viz. BARI (Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute) Tomato 14 and BARI Tomato 15. The experimental design was randomized complete block design (factorial) with three replications. Unit plot size was 4.8 m × 1 m. The seedlings were transplanted on the November 30th, 2013 maintaining a spacing 60 cm × 40 cm. The crop was fertilized with cowdung 10 t/ha, Urea 550 kg/ha, TSP 200 kg/ha, MOP (muriate of potash) 200 kg/ha. Total amount of cowdung, TSP (triple superphosphate) and 1/3 of each urea and MOP were applied during final land preparation. The rest of urea and MOP were applied in three equal installments at 15, 30 and 45 days after transplanting. Irrigation was done after application of fertilizer. Other intercultural operations and plant protection measures were taken as deemed needed. Data was collected on different yield contributing characters and yield.
