Screening of Lentil Germplasms Against Stemphylium Blight

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The screening experiment was conducted with 61 accessions based on previous year’s trial for Stemphylium Blight (SB) resistance at Pulses Research Centre (PRC), Ishurdi, Pabna. These accessions were screened in natural field environments to identify resistance sources for potential use in lentil breeding. Lentil variety BARI Masur-1 (susceptible) was used as checks with consistent results throughout the experiment. The highest frequency of resistance to SB was found in LRIL-22-112, ILL-5082 and ILL-6314 (0.43) and yield was produced 1718.52, 1518.52 and 1496.30 (kg/ha) respectively. The highest yield (2118.52 kg/ha) was produced by the entry LT-07. Apart from this seventeen entry were selected for disease resistance and yield performance. Upon further multilocation trial, these sources can potentially be used to develop new commercial cultivars with SB disease resistance.

Objectives:

The present study was conducted to continue search for resistant genotypes against SB disease of lentil in natural environment

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Pulses Research Centre, Ishurdi, Pabna, during 2016-17. To observe stemphylium blight disease, sixty one lentils advanced entries were collected from the Pulse Pathology and Plant Breeding section of PRC, Ishurdi, Pabna. Each line was sown in single row of 1m length allowing a susceptible check (BARI Masur-1) after every 2 test lines with continuous sowing of seed. Three replications were used having line to line distance of 40 cm. The seeds were sown on November 11, 2016. Infected crop debris from previous year was spread between rows to build up Stemphylium inocula. The experiment was monitored regularly. Intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. The disease severity was scored according to 0-5 scale (Bakr and Ahmed 1992) where 0 = no infection (HR), 1 = a few scattered leaf infections but no twig blighted (R), 2 = 5–10% leaflet infection and/or a few scattered (1%) twigs blighted (MR), 3 = 11–20% leaflet infection and/or 1–5% twigs blighted (MS), 4 = 21–50% leaflet infection and/or 6–10% twigs blighted (S), and 5 = 51% leaflet infection and/or = 10% twigs blighted (HS).The data were analyzed statistically using GenStat version 18.

Screening result revealed the significant difference among the lines which became well pronounced in all the tested parameters (Table 3.1). All the test entries varied significantly considering their disease severity and yield. The lowest stemphylium blight disease severity was recorded in ILL-5082 (0.43), ILL-6314 (0.43) and LRIL-22-112 (0.43) and the highest severity (5) was in BARI Masur-1.Disease severity was also higher level in some test entries. The highest yield (2118.52kg/ha) was produced by the entry LT-07 and the lowest yield was in entry ILL-3241 (377.78 kg/ha). Consideration of disease severity and yield out of sixty one entries seventeen lentil lines viz. LRIL-22-112, LRIL-22-187, LT-07, LT-08, BLX-06004-12, BLX-06004-2, ILL-5109, ILL-5117, ILL-6418, ILL-5091, ILL-6344, ILL-6367, ILL-5082, ILL-4705, ILL-6314, ILL-6321, and ILL-7558, have the potential to continue research in regards to breeding for stemphylium disease resistance. The results from the present study would contribute to relevant scientific knowledge that will help with the development of an effective breeding strategy for SB resistance in lentil.
