Efficacy of Fungicides on the Management of Stemphylium Blight in Lentil

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted in the Pulses Research Centre, Ishurdi, Pabna, Regional Pulses Research Station, Madaripur, Regional Agriculture Research Station, Jessore and Regional Horticulture Research Station, Patuakhali during 2016-17 to find out the effective and economic fungicide in controlling stemphylium blight of lentil. Six fungicides were tested for their efficacy against the disease. All the fungicides showed significantly better performance over untreated control. Stemphylium blight disease severity ranged from 1.6-4.8 in 0 to 5 in scale. The lowest disease severity was observed in (Tebuconazole 25 %) Folicur (1.6) sprayed plot which was lower from Secure, Nativo, Rovral and Companion with highest severity (4.8) in untreated control plots. The highest yield (1066Kg/ha) with a 73.9% increase over check was obtained from Folicur sprayed plots which was statistically similar to Nativo (1048 Kg/ha), secure (1046 Kg/ha) and Rovral (1007Kg/ha) sprayed plots. The lowest yield (613 Kg/ha) was recorded in untreated control plot. Economic analysis revealed that the highest Marginal Benefit Cost Ratio (MBCR 4.53) obtained from Folicur sprayed plot followed by Companion and lowest in Acrobat MZ (2.17). Considering the disease reduction and economic benefit, Folicur appeared more promising fungicide than others.

Objectives:

To search for new fungicides in contrast with Rovral for management of stemphylium blight of lentil.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in the Pulses Research Centre, Ishurdi, Pabna Regional Pulses Research Station, Madaripur, Regional Agriculture Research Station, Jessore and Regional Horticulre Research Station, Patuakhali during 2016-17. The experiment was carried out in randomized complete block design with three replications. The plot size was 5 m x 4 m and distance between the two rows was 40 cm. The seeds of BARI Masur-1 were sown continuously in rows on November 11, 2016. Six fungicidal treatments viz. T1 = Rovral (Iprodione 10%) @ (2g/L), T2 = Secure (Mancozeb 50% + Fenamidone 10%) @ (2g/L), T₃= Folicur EW 250 (Tebuconazole 25 %) @ (1ml/L), T₄=Nativo (Tebuconazole 25 %+ Trifloxystrobin 25%) @ (2g/L), T₅= Companion (Mancozeb 63% + Carbendazim 12%) @ (2g/L), T₆ = Acrobat MZ (Mancozeb 50% + dimethomorph 9%) @ (2g/L)= and T₇= Untreated control (water spray). Intercultural operations were done in order to maintain normal hygienic condition of the crop. Weeding was done two times during the period of crop growth. One weeding was done at 20 days and another 50 days after sowing. Fungicides were sprayed four times starting from the first appearance of the disease and continued at an interval of 7 days. Control plots were sprayed with water. The experiment was monitored regularly to observe the onset of Stemphylium blight disease. Before total harvesting of the crop, 10 plants were picked up randomly from each plot for recording data of plant population, plant height, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per pod and grain yield of each plot were recorded and converted it kg/ha. Disease severity scale (0-5) was used for rating of Stemphylium blight as 0 = No infection, 1 = Few scattered leaf infections but no twig blighted, 2 = 5–10% leaflet infection and/or few scattered 1% twigs blighted, 3 = 11–20% leaflet infection and/or 1–5 % twigs blighted, 4 = 21– 50% leaflet infection and/or 6–10 % twigs blighted and 5 = 51% leaflet infection and/or = 10% twigs blighted developed by Bakr and Ahmed (1992). The data were analyzed statistically using R software for calculating the mean values and for test of significance.

Achievement/Findings:

Disease and yield parameters were accordingly assessed and it was observed that, treatment of Nativo Rovral, Companion and Secure provided the good control but application of Folicur @1ml/L starting from the appearance of Stemphylium blight disease symptom at interval of 7 days has provided highest economic return. Therefore, Folicur appeared to more promising and hence recommended. However, further assessment is necessary to establish the current results.
