Field Screening of Lr-26 for Stemphylium Blight Resistance at Prc, Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The screening experiment was conducted with 131 accessions at Pulses Research Centre (PRC), Ishurdi, Pabna. The highest frequency of resistance to Stemphylium Blight (SB) was found in LR-26-196, LR-26-187, LR-26-275, CDC Milestone, LR-26-184, LR-26-198, LR-26-220, CDC Robin, LR-26-216, LR-26-281, LR-26-123 and LR-26-241and produced few seed. These sources can potentially be used to develop new commercial cultivars with SB disease resistance.

Objectives:

The present study was conducted to continue search for resistant genotypes against SB disease of lentil in natural condition.

Methodology:

One hundred thirty one lentils advanced entries were collected from the University of Saskatchewan. Each line was sown in single row of 1m length. Three replications were used having line to line distance of 30 cm. The seeds were sown on November 11, 2016. Infected crop debris from previous year was spread between rows to build up Stemphylium inocula. The disease severity was scored according to 0-10 scale, where 0 = 0% DS, 1 = 1-10% DS, and so forth, up to 10 = 91-100% DS.

Achievement/Findings:

Screening result revealed the significant difference among the lines which became well pronounced in all the tested parameters (Table 3.7). The lowest stemphylium blight disease severity was recorded in LR-26-123 (0), LR-26-198 (0) and LR-26-187 (0) and the highest severity (10) was in BARI Masur-1. Out of 131 entries only 12 are produced seed but these entries are remarkable to resistance to stemphylium disease. This is the first year trial, so next year it will be used for breeding purpose.
