Dr. Masud Hossain Khan
Chief Scientific Officer
Riverine Station, Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute

For the refinement of cage culture technology several experiments were done on different issues such as improvement of suitable stocking density, optimization of feed with feeding regime, growth performance of different sources of tilapia to know the impact of quality seed, impact of commercial probiotics on the health status of tilapia and to know the present status of cage culture in Chandpur and adjacent areas by entrepreneurs level a survey was also done. After the two times of  experimental cage culture on stocking densities at 30/m3,50/m3, 70/m3 and 50/m3, 75 /m3, 100/m3 fingerlings/cage it were revealed that 50/m3 fingerlings/cage stoking density is suitable for culture. For the optimization of feed and feeding regime two experiments were done at the feeding @ 4%, 5%, 6% and 5 %, 7.5%, 10% of body weight with the frequencies of two times daily and comparatively feeding at 5% body weight shown the best performance in these experiments. Another experiment was done to know the impact of seed quality on the growth performance of tilapia culture in cages. For that region the fingerlings were collected from three different renowned hatchery of Bangladesh and stocked for experimental culture. The study revealed that different sources of fingerlings shown the different growth performance of tilapia in cage culture.

  1. To study the status of cage culture in Chandpur, Patuakhali and Rangamati districts being implemented by different GOs and NGOs
  2. To determine the effectiveness of commercial semi-buoyant feed in cage culture
  3. To refine stocking density of cage culture technology
  4. To optimize the supplemental feed requirement for monosex tilapia culture in net cage

The experiments were carried out in Dakatia River, Chandpur Sadar, Kaptai Lake in Rangamati and also in Meghna River at Munshigang district of Bangladesh throughout the project period. Six/Nine net cages were installed for each experiment in the suitable places near the bank of Dakatia, Kaptai Lake and Meghna River.  Experimental cages were used with the dimension of 3×3×1.5m, 3×3×2m and 6×3×2m for better management of different experiment throughout the project period. Each cage was made by plastic net (mesh size 2.5cm) with an inner layer cage of knot-less polyethylene net (mesh size 1.1 cm). Frames of the cages were made by GI pipe (1.0 inch). Net cages were hanged with cage frame and bamboo rafts which were floated by means of vacuum 250 liters sized iron drum. Each cage was covered at the top by another piece of tire cord net (7-7.5cm mesh size) to prevent escaping of fish by jumping and predation by bird. The whole structure was fixed with bamboo poles at each corner and tied with anchors at both side by nylon rope to facilitate easy floating of cages depending on water level. The cages were surrounded by bamboo raft to protect the cages from aquatic weeds and other hazardous floating elements. Each experiment was comprised of three treatments (T1, T2, T3) having three replications of each. Mono-sex (all male) tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) having an average weight of 25 to 30g sized were used for each experiment.

There are a lot of cage farmers grown up in Chandpur, Laxmipur & Munshiganj and they have commercially cultured monosex tilapia in cages followed by BFRI cage culture technology.  Day by day booming the monosex nile tilapia production at cage culture system in Bangladesh despite some constraints. It might be due to lack of their technical knowledge, inadequate research information, lack of quality feed, seed and unknown disease infestation. Now-a-days outbreak of unknown disease infestation causes of high mortality and lower growth performance in cage aquaculture appeared as huge financial losses of private entrepreneurs. On the basis of seed quality cage production varied from farm to farm. To overcome these problems we have done some research works on seed quality of tilapia and controlling measure for disease infestation in cage culture. Different sources of monosex tilapia were stocked in experimental culture knowing the seed quality and the tilapia shows different growth performance in this culture. So, the quality seed production should be ensured in the tilapia producing hatchery of Bangladesh. It was also reported that the cage farmers have faced frequently losses in cage production by unknown disease infestation at pre-monsoon season. For this reason we have cultured the probiotic treated monosex tilapia in cages experimentally and we have found the best growth performance, survivality of probiotic treated tilapia in cage culture.
