Development of Cost Effective Quality Feed Using Locally Available Feed Ingredients for Black Tiger Shrimp (penaeus Monodon)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Post larvae of shrimp (P. monodon), average body weight of 0.005g were collected from Cox`s Bazar through PL supplier. The nursed shrimp PL of average body weight of 2.0 g stocked at the rate of 120/dec. and reared for a period of 90 days. They fed with Feed-1, Feed-2, Feed-3 and Feed-4. Weekly sampling was done for measurement of growth and survival and feed was adjusted accordingly. As the experiment conducted in the farmer's field where the nursed shrimp PL of average body weight of 1.5 g stocked at the rate of 120no./dec. After three and half months of culture, the growth recorded 18.69g, 20.12g, 18.39g and 17.01g for Feed-1(T₁), Feed-2 (T₂), Feed-3 (T₃), and Feed-4 (T₄) (commercial feed) respectively. The highest growth performance of 20.12g obtained from Feed-2 (fish meal 12%, meat & bone meal 15%, soya-bean meal 12%, Sunflower oil cake 10%, mustard oil cake 10%, Kolmilata 10%, Duckweed 5%, rice bran 14%, wheat flour 5%, limestone 1%, Salt 0.5%, vitamin & minerals 0.2%, Pellete binder 0.3%) and the lowest of 17.69g was recorded in grower shrimp supplied with feed-3.

Objectives:

Formulation of artificial diets for bagda grow-out using locally available ingredients
Determine the efficacy of formulated feed on growth, survival and production of shrimp in earthen ponds/ghers

Methodology:

Different types of collected local feed ingredients such as dhyancha seeds (Sesbania sp.), duckweed (Lemna minor), kolmilata (Ipomoea aquatic), sunflower oil cake (Helianthus annuus), mustard oilcake, Sunflower oil, soya bean meal, meat and bone meal was selected for the formulation of grow-out feeds. Three diets with a protein level of 35%was formulated using Pearson`s square method and adjusted this level by trial and error method. Locally available feed ingredients like rice bran, wheat bran, wheat flour, as well as vitamin & minerals were also used as common ingredients for the formulation of three diets. Formulated diets were analyzed for proximate composition to check the accuracy of the formulation. Diets were palletized and dried at room for 2-3 days. The feed was kept in airtight polythene bags and stored at room temperature. The feeding trial was conducted in mini ponds of Shrimp Research Station, Bagerhat and in the farmer's field. The feeding trial was categorized into four treatments each having two replications. Treatment-1(T₁) was assigned for Feed-1, Treatment-2 (T₂) for Feed-2, Treatment-3 (T₃) for Feed-3 and Treatment-4 (T₄) for Feed-4 (Commercial feed).

Achievement/Findings:

The results of the feeding trials in research ponds of SRS bagerhat for grow-out of Penaeus monodon feed-3 (comprising fish meal 24%, meat & bone meal 12%, soya-bean meal 8%, mustard oil cake 10%, Dhyancha seed 10%, Sola 10%, rice bran 19.55%, wheat flour 5%, lime stone 1%, vitamin & minerals 0.15% and 1%) show significantly better growth, survival, specific growth rate (SGR) and lower FCR values than grow-out fed with Diet-1, Diet-2 and Commercial diet. In this study, dhayncha seed soaked (Sesbaniaspp) was used in Diet-1 as a good protein source replaced by soyabean meal & mustard oil cake for minimizing production cost as well as higher growth of shrimp. But diet-1 with dhayncha seed soaked (Sesbaniaspp) showed lower growth performance, survivality than diet-3 with soyabean meal and mustard oil cake. In case of dhayncha seed soaked (Sesbaniaspp), it may content any anti-nutritional factors which are responsible for lower growth of PL.Then the next year dhayncha seed soaked (Sesbaniaspp) was used replaced by kolmilata and duckweed which are locally available low cost.Which minimized the feed cost and gave better result in diet-2 comprising2 (fish meal 12%, meat &bone meal 15%, soya-bean meal 12%, mustard oil cake 10%, Dhyancha seed 5%, Kolmilata 20%, Duck weed 5%, rice bran 14%, wheat flour 5%, lime stone 1%, Salt 0.5%, vitamin & minerals 0.2%, Pellete binder 0.3%) . Finally in the farmers field diet-2 comprising(fish meal 12%, meat &bone meal 15%, soya-bean meal 12%, Sunflower oil Cake 10%,mustard oil cake 10%, Kolmilata 10%, Duck weed 5%, rice bran 14%, wheat flour 5%, lime stone 1%, Salt 0.5%, vitamin & minerals 0.2%, Pellete binder 0.3%) showed significantly better growth, survival, specific growth rate (SGR) and lower FCR values than grow-out fed with Diet-1, Diet-3 and Commercial diet. Significantly this feed composition will fulfilled the protein demand as well as cost effective.
