Investigation on the Access Route of Toxic Drugs and Chemicals in Fish

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Assessment of accumulation of different aqua drugs revealed the most common changes in gill were hyperplasia, desquamation, and necrosis of epithelial, epithelial lifting, oedema, lamellar fusion, collapsed secondary lamellae and curling of secondary lamellae after using melatheon 5ml/dec., tetracycline 2g/kg feed and chlortetracycline 2g/kg feed and oxytetracycline 2g/kg feed. In the liver tissues of fish exposed to melatheon and tetracycline, cloudy swelling of hepatocytes, congestion, vacuolar degeneration, karyolysis, dilation of and nuclear hypertrophy were seen. In the kidney tissues of fish exposed to melatheon and tetracycline, vacuoles mainly in the epithelium of the proximal tubules, hemorrhage and necrosis were seen.

Objectives:

To find out the residues and accumulation level of aquadrugs and chemicals in fish, plankton and benthos.
To categorize the listed drugs and chemicals on the basis of legal approval, registration and beneficial effect.
To find out the routes and means that the drugs/chemicals gain access into the country and in aquaculture practices.

Methodology:

An experiment was conducted in the pond complex of Freshwater Station of the BFRI, Mymensingh. Eight ponds having an area of 1 dec each was used in this experiment. The fish were divided into four (T₁, T_2,T₃ and T₄) groups of 7 species [Catla (Catla catla), Rohu (Labeo rohita), Mrigal (Cirrhinus mrigala), Silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix), Pangas (Pangasius hypophthalmus), Shing (Heteropneustes fossilis) and Thai koi (Anabas testudineus)]. The test fish species were reared in experimental ponds. The first (T_1,) second (T₂), third (T₃) and four (T₄) groups were exposed to melatheon 5ml/dec., tetracycline 2g/kg feed and chlortetracycline 2g/kg feed and oxytetracycline 2g/kg feed, respectively 15 days interval for culture in 90 days.
