Performance of Short Duration Lentil Lines Under Different Sowing Method with Different Seeding Rates. Season 2016-2017

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted at PRC, Ishurdi and PRSS, BARI,Gazipur during rabi season of 2015-16 &2016-17 to find out the sowing method and optimum seed rate for short duration lentil lines for better crop growth and yield. There were two sowing methods- line sowing 20 cm apart and broadcast, and four seed rates i.e.,50 kg/ha, 60 kg/ha, 70 kg/ha and 80 kg/ha. It was laid out in a RCB design with three replications. It was observed that between line and broadcast sowing there was no significant difference but slightly higher yield was obtained by line sowing for both the locations. Among the seed rates 80 kg/ha produced the highest significant seed yield and the lowest was obtained by 50 kg/ha for both the locations. The combined effect of sowing method under different seed rates had no significant differences but numerically the highest seed yield was obtained by line sowing with 80 kg/ha seed rate for both the locations. The highest gross margin was recorded from 80 kg/ha seed rate under line sowing for both the locations. But the highest BCR was obtained from 70 kg/ha seed rate with line sowing for both the locations. So, the line sowing under 70-80 kg/ha seed rate is suitable form short duration genotype/line for better yield performance.

Objectives:

To find out the optimum seed rate under different sowing method for short duration lentil for better crop growth and yield.

Methodology:

The field experiment was conducted at PRC, Ishurdi and PRSS, Gazipur during rabi season of 2015-16 & 2016-17 to find out the suitable sowing method with optimum seed rate for short duration lentil lines for better crop growth and yield. There were two sowing methods- line sowing 20 cm apart and broadcast, and four seed rateseg.50 kg/ha,60 kg/ha, 70 kg/ha and 80 kg/ha. It was laid out in a RCB (Factorial) design with three replications. Plot size was 4 m x 2.4m.The genotype BLX-05008-15 was used and seed rates and sowing methods were used as per treatment. In the experimental plots, fertilizers @14-20-20-10 kg NPKS/ha was applied during final land preparation. The sowing date was 19 November, 2016 at Gazipur and 16 November, 2016 at Ishurdi. Intercultural operations were done as and when required. The crop was harvested on 13 February, 2017 (87 DAS) and 18 February, 2017 (95 DAS) at Gazipur and Ishurdi, respectively. During harvest data on yield contributing characters were recorded from 10 randomly selected plants from each plot and grain yield was recorded from 2.0 m²/plots and converted into kg/ha. The recorded data were statistically analyzed and mean separation was done following LSD test. Economic analysis results are presented. The highest gross margin was recorded from 80kg/ha seed rate under line sowing for both the locations. But the highest BCR was obtained by 70kg/ha seed rate with line sowing for both the locations in 2016-17.

It was revealed from the last two years study that line sowing (20cm apart with continuous seed sowing) under 70-80 kg/ha seed rate is suitable for short duration lentil genotype/line for better yield as well as economic benefit.
