Length-weight and Length–length Relationships of Some Small Indigenous Fish Species from the Mathabhanga River, Southwestern Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The present study describes the length-weight (LWR) and length–length (LLR) relationships for eight important small indigenous fish species (SIS) from the Mathabhanga River, southwestern Bangladesh, namely Amblypharyngodon mola (Hamilton, 1822), Channa punctata (Bloch, 1793), Hyporam-phus quoi (Valenciennes, 1847), Macrognathus aculeatus (Bloch, 1786), M. pancalus (Hamilton, 1822), Nandus nandus (Hamilton, 1822), Puntius sophore (Hamilton, 1822), and Setipinna phasa (Hamilton, 1822). A total of 2543 specimens used for this study was caught by traditional fishing gear from January to December 2005. To the best knowledge of the authors, this study presented the first reference on LWR and LLR for these species from Bangladeshi waters.

Objectives:

The aim of the present paper was to carry out the first complete and comprehensive description of the LWR and LLR of these eight species from the Mathabhanga River, southwestern Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The Mathabhanga River is a branch of the Padma River(known in India as the Ganges River) located in Chuadanga, southwestern district of Bangladesh (23°21¢–23°51¢N; 88°38¢-88°62¢E). It is believed to be an important spawning and feeding ground of riverine fish species in southwestern Bangladesh. Samples were collected monthly from the sampling site (Rogunathpur area) in the Mathabhanga River during day-time (10.00–17.00 hours) from January to December 2005 by means of the traditional fishing gearjhaki jal(cast net), tar jal (square lift net), and unhair (conical trap). Specimens were preserved in 10% buffered formalin, then packed in wooden boxes and transported to the laboratory for identification to the species level. All individuals sampled(2438) were weighed (BW) with an electric balance to the nearest 0.01 g; the total length (TL) of each fish was measured with slide calipers to the nearest 0.1 cm. The statistical significance level ofr2was estimated and the parameters and was estimated by least-square linear regressions performed on the transformed equation, log BW,loga+b·log TL, where BW is the body weight (g) and TL is the total length (cm). Growth type was determined by the t-test for all species studied. Standard length (SL) and fork length(FL) were also measured to the nearest cm to make the relationships TL vs SL, SL vs FL, and FL vs TL by linear regression.

In conclusion, this study provides basic information on LWRs and LLRs for eight fish species that would be useful for fishery biologists/managers in Bangladesh.
