Block Demonstration of Lentil Relaying with T. Aman Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Research managed demonstration was conducted in Baoikhola under MLT site, Atghoria, Pabna during rabi season of 2012-13 in farmers’ fields to demonstrate the optimum management technology for lentil cultivation as well as disseminate BARI Masur 7 at the farmers’ level. Primed seeds of lentil (BARI masur 7) were sown 10-15 days before harvesting of T. aman rice as relay. The seed yield was recorded as 1927.25 kg ha^-1 that produced an excellent gross margin (104300.0 Tk. ha^-1).

Objectives:

i. To demonstrate the benefit of optimum cultural management of lentil to the lentil growers so that they can follow the optimum management to stabilize lentil yield.

ii. To disseminate BARI Masur 7 quickly through extension personnel and farmers.

Methodology:

BARI developed improved variety BARI Masur 7 was demonstrated as block approach in Baoikhola village at MLT site, Atghoria, Pabna during rabi season, 2012-13. The size of demonstration plot was about 3 acre and five farmers were involved in the demonstration with the supervision of OFRD scientists, ARS, Pabna with funding by OFID. The cooperative farmers were selected after a group discussion meeting jointly organized by OFRD, ARS, Pabna. OFRD, ARS, Pabna supplied inputs (Seed, fertilizers and fungicides) and the farmers were given one day training program on optimum management of lentil production. The seeds were sown on 08-14 November, 2012 on the standing rice fields. Seeds were soaked overnight for ease of germination. The fertilizers were applied @ 37-08-20-13 kg N-P-K-S ha^-1. The seed rate was 50 kg ha^-1. No weeding but three times fungicides (Rovral 50 WP) spraying were done starting from at the time of flowering.

Achievement/Findings:

The farmers enriched their skill, knowledge and improved production practices through training and block demonstration which help to increase the productivity of BARI masur-7 per unit area. Blocked farmers used recommended fertilizers than non-block farmer. The cultivation of BARI masur-7 through block approach created an excellent impact towards the large scale adoption of lentil in the farmers’ field. Being high yield potential and higher economic return, the variety (BARI masur-7) itself has made its suitability for growing in the Lentil – Mungbean - T. aman and Lentil-Jute-T. aman cropping patterns. Farmers preserved large amount of seeds for wide area extension in the coming season. Due to technology intervention there is a chance to improve income and status of the farm family. Economic solvency helps them to educate their children and special dignity in the society.
