Effect of Varieties and Disbudding on the Quality Cut Flower Production of Chrysanthemum

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the Floriculture Research Field of Horticulture Research Centre, BAR], Gazipur during 2014-2015 to study the effect of varieties and disbudding to produce quality cut flower of chrysanthemum varieties. Longest flower stalk length was found in standard white (19.89cm), maximum diameter of flower was obtained in standard yellow (7.05cm). Disbudding had significant influence in stalk length and flower diameter. Whereas highest stalk length and flower diameter were achieved under allowing 4b1oom/plant which are 24.37cm and 7.06cm respectively.

Objectives:

To find out the suitable varieties for Chrysanthemum cut flower production. ii. To ascertain the optimum number of bloom per plant for Chrysanthemum cut flower production.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at Floriculture Research Field of FIRC, BARI, Gazipur during rabi season of 2014-15. Chrysanthemum genotypes—standard white and standard yellow combination with six level of treatment viz, no disbudding, Allowing 4 blooms/plant, Allowing 5 blooms/plant, Allowing 6 blooms/plant, Allowing 7 blooms/plant and Allowing 8 blooms/plant. The experiment was laid out in RCB factorial design with 3 replications. The unit plot size was 1.80 m x 3 m. Spacing was maintained at 30 cm from row to row and 30 cm from plant to plant Healthy and uniform seedlings of two genotypes were planted on 12 November, 2014. Experimental plots were thoroughly drenched with Bavistin @ 2 mg/L. The experiment field was Well prepared by adding 10t cowdung and fertilized @ 400 kg urea, 275 TSP and 300 kg MoP/ha, Cowdung, TSP and MoP were applied as basal and urea was top-dressed in two equal splits at 25 and 50 (DAT). The data on plants survived/plot, Days to bud burst, stalk length, flower diameter, flower sticks/plot and No. of sticks/ha were recorded from five randomly selected plants of each unit plot. All data were analyzed statistically and the mean differences were adjudged by DMRT.

Achievement/Findings:

Considering the cut flower production, standard white showed better performance due to its longer stalk. Due to attractive yellow color and flower diameter, standard yellow rna.y be considered as cut flower. Regarding disbudding, 4 blooms/plant may also be considered for cut flower production. This is first year study so this experiment should be repeated further in the next season.
