Influence of Maturity Stages on Seed Quality of China Aster

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was conducted at Floriculture Research Field of HRC, BARI during the winter season of 2014-15 to find out the optimum maturity stages of China aster seed Two genotypes A₁and A₂ (standard white and standard pink) and 6 maturity stages viz. 21, 28, 35, 42, 49 and 56 DAF (days after flowering) were included in this study. Among the genotypes A₂ responded better in seed quality parameters and 42 DAF was found optimum for harvesting seed for both the genotypes.

Objectives:

To find out the optimum maturity stages of harvesting China aster seeds.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted during winter season of 2014-2015 at the Floriculture Research Field of HRC, BARI. There were 12 treatment combinations comprising of 2 genotypes of China aster A_i and A₂ (standard white and standard pink) and 6 maturity stages (21, 28, 35, 42, 49 and 56 days after flowering). The experiment was conducted in RCBD with 3 replications. Before planting, land was prepared properly and cow dung, TSP and MoP were applied @ 5t/ha, 120 and 80 kg/ha at the time of final land preparation. Urea 100 kg/ha was applied in two equal installments of 45 and 60 days after transplanting. Watering and other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Data were recorded on capitulum diameter, capitulum weight, seed weight/capitulum, 1000 seed weight, seed moisture content, germination percentage, root length, shoot length, seedling dry weight and seedling vigor index. The recorded data were statistically analyzed and treatment means were separated by DMRT according to Steel et al. (1997).

Achievement/Findings:

Considering the responses to harvesting dates and other seed quality components, it can be said that Standard pink (A₂) genotype performed better in most of the quality parameters of seed quality and both the genotypes of China aster can be harvested at 42 days after flowering for better seed quality. For more accuracy of the result the experiment should be repeated in the next year.
