The experiment was undertaken to study the suitability of different pulses as relay cropping with T.aman in the farmer’s field of High Barind Tract to increase production and develop farmers' livelihood. The field trial was conducted at the farmer's field of FSRD site Bashantopur, Godagari, Rajshahi during Rabi 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19. The study was designed by randomized complete block design with three replications. There were three varieties of different pulses i.e. BARI Masur-6, BARI Motor-1, BARI Khessari-3. The yield and most of the yield contributing characters like Plants m-2, Plant ht (cm), No. of seeds pod-1and  TGW(g) showed significant variation in those three years.Grass pea (BARI Khessari-3) performed best in three seasons in respect of yield (1.40 t ha-1 ,1.12 t ha-1 and 1.13 t ha-1 respectively ) and incase of lentil equivalent yield (LEY), gross return, gross margin and benefit cost ratio (BCR) showed higher in lentil (BARI Masur-6) than grass pea because of higher market price of lentil during 2017-18 and 2018-19 but opposite scenario was showed in the previous year. In the 1st year, lentil (BARI Masur-6) showed the poorest performance in gross return, gross margin and benefit cost ratio (BCR) whereas pea (BARI Motor-1) showed the lowest performance during 2nd year and grass pea (BARI Khessari-3) showed the lowest performance during 3rd year.

To find out the suitability of above mentioned pulses in the farmer’s field of High Barind Tract.

The field trial was conducted at the farmer's field at FSRD site Bashantapur, Godagari, Rajshahi during Rabi 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19 to find out the suitability of different pulse crop as relay cropping in the High Barind Tract .The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications (dispersed). There were three varieties of different pulses i.e. BARI Masur-6, BARI Motor-1, BARI Khessari-3. The unit plot size was 3m x 4m. The land was selected where T. Aman rice has been grown and the land will not be ready for Rabi crop in mid-November due to late harvest of rice or moisture goes down. Seeds of BARI Masur -6, BARI Motor-1 and BARI Khesari-3 @ 35, 35 and 50 kg/ha, respectively were broadcasted in the existing rice (Swarna as T. aman rice) field as relay crop during 07 November 2016 and 05-12 November 2017 and 08 November 2018. Rice was harvested retaining about 25 cm tall stubbles height at 17 November 2016. Fertilizers @ 20-20-10 kg/ha of PKS were applied as basal during sowing while N @14 kg/ha was top dressed at 20-25 DAE. Weeding and plant protection measures against insect and diseases were taken as required. No irrigation was provided in trial. Intercultural operations viz. weeding and insecticide spray was done in order to support normal plant growth. In the 1st year, lentil was harvested on 07 March 2017, pea was harvested on 17 March 2017and grass pea was harvested on 22 March 2017.  In the season 2017-18 lentil was harvested on 03-16 March 2018, pea was harvested on 10-15March 2018 and grass pea was harvested on 20-22 March 2018. In the season 2018-19 lentil was harvested on 09 March 2019, pea was harvested on 15 March 2019 and grass pea was harvested on 12 March 2019.  The productivity of different crop sequences was compared by calculating their economic lentil equivalent yield (LEY) using formula given by Ahlawat and Sharma (1993), where LEY = {Yield of each crop (t ha-1) x Economic value of respective crop (Tk t-1)} / {Price of lentil (Tk t-1)}. Data on yield were recorded from 3 m2 in central area. The data were analyzed statistically and the mean differences were adjudged by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (Gomez and Gomez, 1984). For yield comparison, seed yield of different crops were converted to lentil equivalent yield (LEY) on the basis of their price. The economic analysis was done for gross return, gross margin and benefit-cost ratio following the method suggested by Perrin et al. (1979).

From three years results of this investigation, it can be concluded that considering the seed yield and wide adaptability of the Khessari, it was suitable among the tested materials for the cultivation as relay crop with T. Aman in the farmers' field of High Barind Tract but lentil is economically profitable due to higher market price.
