A field experiment was conducted at Pulses Research Centre (PRC) and Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS) during Kharif season of 2018 to determine the critical period for weed competition during mung bean growth under different crop establishment options. Studies on weed dynamics in mung bean sown under two tillage systems were conducted at Pulses Research Centre Ishurdi, Pabna, Bangladesh. A commonly grown mung bean cultivar'BARI Mung - 6’ was sown on 27th March of 2018 under strip planting system (SP) and conventional tillage (CT) and it was subjected to different durations of weed competition [weeding at 15, 30, and 45 days after sowing (DAS) and season-long weed competition]. Season long weed-free plots (7 times weeding) were maintained under each tillage system for comparison. The broad-leaved and sedge weed densities were higher under season-long weed competition (43 m-2 and 138 m-2) compared to weed-free at 45 DAS (34 m-2 and 112 m-2), 30 DAS (30 m-2 and 97 m-2) and 15 DAS (17 m-2 and 91 m-2). However, the maximum grassy weed density was recorded in SP plots under the season-long weed competition (475 m-2) and the lowest in CT plots under weed free at 15 DAS (113 m-2). The seed yield was significantly higher in the plots of season long weed-free (1.24 t/ha) while the lowest yield (0.83 t/ha) was recorded in plots under season-long weed competition. The seed yield loss relative to season long weed-free plots were higher in plots under season-long weed competition (32 %) followed by the plots under weed free at 45 DAS (29 %) and 30 DAS (20 %), and the lowest in weed free at 15 DAS (5 %). The results suggest that weeding at 15 DAS was effective in controlling weed and minimizing yield losses of mung bean compared with delayed weeding and longer durations of weed competition.

To determine the critical stage of weed competition and optimum sowing time on the performance of Mungbean.

The study was conducted at the Pulses Research Centre, Ishurdi, Pabna, Bangladesh. The soil of the experimental site belongs to Agro-Ecological Zone – 11 (High Ganges River Flood Plains). The initial soil properties were homogenous. The mean annual rainfall was about 1200 ± 300 mm. The experiment was conducted during the kharif-1 season (pre-monsoon season) of 2018 and comprised of two factors – crop establishment method (CE): strip planting (SP) and conventional tillage (CT) and – durations of weed competition (WC): 15, 30 and 45 (DAS). Season-long weed competition (weedy check) and weed-free plots were also maintained for comparison. Conventional tillage was accomplished by cultivating the soil thrice with a power tiller followed by laddering each time. Sowing in the SP plots was performed using a Versatile Multiple-crop Planter into an undisturbed seedbed in a single pass operation. The treatment factors were arranged in a split-plot design with tillage practices as the main plots and the durations of weed competition as the subplots and replicated four times in plot sizes of 30 m2. In total, there were 30 experimental units during both years. The previous crop was lentil in the plot. Glyphosate was applied in both SP and CT plots before 48 hours of mungbean sowing. BARI Mung-6 was used for mungbean crop. The recommended nutrient such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium @ 20-40-20 kg/ha were applied as basal dose at final land preparation. The seeds were sown maintaining line spacing of 30 cm. The seed rate of mungbean was used 30 kg/ha for both SP and CT. Except for weed management, similar agronomic management practices were done as per requirement for all the treatments. Fungicide, insecticide and pesticide were applied as per the requirement to control disease, pest and insect if any. Data were recorded for grain and straw yield, plant height, number of pods per plant, pod length, number of seeds per pod and 1000 grain weight. Data were analyzed statistically using R software. The GenStat 17th Edition and R-software package were used for all statistical analyses. The mean differences between treatments were separated by the least significant difference (LSD) at P≤ 0.05 for the measured variables.

The present study was concluded that weed competition even for weed free at 15 DAS reduced grain yield of mungbean. All types of weeds were much higher in SP as compared to CT system. Weed free at 15 DAS was effective in minimizing weed proliferation and lowering risk of yield penalty associated with a later weed controlled such as WF 30 DAS and WF 45 DAS. Therefore, it is concluded that weeds must be controlled at15 DAS to avoid yield loss.
