Small Scale Commercial Water Chestnut Cultivation in Jamalpur District: a Profitabie Option for Improving Rural Livelihoods Through Waterlogged Fallow Land Utilization

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A survey study was carried out to assess the existing agronomic practices of water chestnut, its profitability and problems of production in two selected water chestnut cultivated areas of Jamalpur district during 2016-17 cropping season. The majority of the farmers had transplanted their saplings during the second week of June to last week of July. Findings of the study revealed that on an average 66% of the total cost was involved for human labour followed by land use (14%), insecticides (7%) and saplings (3%), respectively. The average yield of water chestnut was found to be 9.77 ton per hectare. The average profit and gross margin was estimated at Tk. 38439 and Tk. 59826 respectively. The production cost of water chestnut/kg was Tk. 9.05 and return was Tk. 12.98. It was also found that all kinds of livelihood assets of the selected farmers increased significantly through commercial water chestnut farming. Lack of scientific production techniques, high infestation of insect pest especially red crab, siltation by river erosion, buyers syndicate and low output price were the major problems in the study areas. Farmers cultivate water chestnut for getting higher profit, maximum use of seasonal waterlogged fallow land and easy growing.

iv. To assess the impacts of commercial water chestnut production on farmers’ livelihood pattern;

v. To identify the problems and constraints faced by the farmers

Methodology:

The present study was conducted in purposively selected two upazilas namely Islampur and Dewanganj under Jamalpur district. Multi-stage simple random sampling techniques was followed to select the sample size. Firstly, in each upazila two block and from each block two villages were selected based on intensive producing areas in consultation with upazila agricultural officer and SAAO to collect primary data and information. Secondly, a list of all water chestnut growing farmers in each selected villages was prepared and Thirdly, a total of 120 farmers taking 30 from each villages were randomly selected. The collected data was coded, edited, summarized, tabulated and analyzed to fulfill the objectives of the study.

Achievement/Findings:

The study revealed that small-scale commercial water chestnut farming is highly profitable from the view point of individual farmers in the waterlogged areas of Jamalpur district. This crop is gaining popularity in the country very quickly due to its high yield potential with low cost. A good opinion came out from the sample farmers in the study areas that higher yield and income as well as fallow land utilization option encouraged them for continuing water chestnut cultivation. It can, therefore, be concluded that production of commercial water chestnut is profitable and helpful for improving the rural livelihood status of the farmers. A considerable scope apparently exists to increase the productivity of commercial water chestnut, therefore income, employment, nutritional status and overall livelihood status of farmers in the study areas as well as other potential areas of Bangladesh. It also helps to ameliorate the problem of gender issue by enabling the women to participate in income generating activities and household decision making process in rural areas.
