Effect of Organic Fertilizer on Spinach Production

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was carried out at Agricultural Research Station, Pabna during the rabi season of 2016-2017 to assess the effect of cowdung as organic fertilizer on yield traits and yield of spinach. Different treatments viz. T₁ = absolute control, T₂ = Recommend dose of chemical fertilizer (RD), T₃ = 10% of N from organic fertilizer + IPNS basis inorganic fertilizer, T₄ = 20% of N from organic fertilizer + IPNS basis inorganic fertilize, T₅= 30% of N from organic fertilizer + IPNS basis inorganic fertilizer and T₆= 40% of N from organic fertilizer + IPNS basis inorganic fertilizer were tested on spinach (local variety). Higher vegetable yield (16.67 t ha^-1) was obtained from 40% of N from organic fertilizer + IPNS basis inorganic fertilizer which was statistically similar to all other treatments except control plot. Maximum economic return in terms of gross return higher gross return (333400 Tk. ha^-1) was obtained from T₆ treatment but higher gross margin (224550 Tk. ha^-1) was attained from T₂ treatment.

Objectives:

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Agricultural Research Station, Pabna during the rabi season of 2016-2017. The experimental plot represents agro-ecological zone 11 (AEZ 11) having Gopalpur soil series. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. T₁ = absolute control, T₂ = Recommend dose of chemical fertilizer (RD), T₃ = 10% of N from organic fertilizer + IPNS basis inorganic fertilizer, T₄ = 20% of N from organic fertilizer + IPNS basis inorganic fertilize, T₅= 30% of N from organic fertilizer + IPNS basis inorganic fertilizer and T₆= 40% of N from organic fertilizer + IPNS basis inorganic fertilizer. Local variety of spinach was used as planting materials. Unit plot size was 3m´2m, maintaining line to line 30 cm distance with continuous sowing. The seeds were sown on December 07, 2016. Half of N and the entire quantity of recommended N, P, K were applied in the form of urea, TSP, MoP, along with different levels of cowdung were applied during final land preparation. Rest of the urea was applied as top dressing at 30 days after sowing. One weeding was done at early vegetative stage to keep the plot weed free. Other intercultural operations were done when required. The crop was harvested on January 26, 2017. Data on different plant characters and yield were collected and analyzed statistically.

Achievement/Findings:

Forty per cent of N from organic fertilizer + IPNS basis inorganic fertilizer plot provided higher yield and higher gross return but it failed to provide higher gross margin due to higher TVC because of using more cowdung.
