Gher Based Agriculture in Southern Areas of Bangladesh: a Socioeconomic Study

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted on the socioeconomic study of the gher based agriculture at south western region of Bangladesh. Data was collected from 150 farmers from three district namely Bagerhat, Khulna and Satkhira. The study was revealed out the socioeconomic characteristics of the gher farmer, their educational status, economic status, year of experience of farming and financing etc. Maximum farmer was 41-50 years old at study areas and their average year of experience was 9.42 years on vegetable farming at gher dike. Most of the farmer was small farmer and maximum farmer has no or less own land, so they cultivate by leasing other land at very high cost. They sell their fish and vegetable at local market and some are at farm gate and collect market and production related information from the neighbor. In the study areas farmer cultivate different types of fish like golda, bagda, ruhi, katla, tilapia and carps fish in the gher. On the other hand they also cultivate different types of vegetable like tomato, brinjal, radish, bean, bottle gourd, ridge gourd, snake gourd, ladis finger, cabbage, cauliflower, pumpkin, bitter gourd, yard long bean, amaranth, Indian spinach, cucumber, pipper, papaya, banana, ash gourd etc. at gher dike. Though farmer cultivate year round vegetable there was no specific cropping pattern, but cropping was high. Farmer cultivates different vegetable at relay cropping. Most of the farmer full fills their daily necessity foods from gher dike vegetable and fish. It helps farmer for fight against food security.

Objectives:

i. To analyze the socioeconomic characteristics of gher farmers;

ii. To assess the existing cropping patterns on the gher land;

iii. To assess the impact of food security of the gher agriculture; and

iv. To suggest some policy guidelines

Methodology:

The present study was conducted at three district and six upazilla (two upozilla from each district) namely Sadar and Chitolmari from Bagerhat district, Dumuria and Digholia from Khulna district and Sadar and Tala from Satkhira district. The study area was purposively selected considering the higher concentration gher agriculture where most of the farmer cultivated vegetable at gher dike. The study was carried out by using formal survey method. A total of 150 farmers out of which 25 from each upozilla was randomly selected for interview. Necessary information regarding this study was collected based on socio economic characteristics of farmer, cropping pattern, fish cultivation and vegetable cultivation etc. Data were collected through pre-designed interview schedule during the 2016-17. Field investigators under the direct supervision of the researcher collected field level data using pre-tested interview schedule. The unit of data collection was a total gher area of each selected farmers where detailed information regarding this crop cultivation and fish cultivation were taken and analysis was done on per hectare basis. The farmer were categorized into small, medium and large. The categories were developed based on the percentage of respondent farmers with respect to each technology. Cropping pattern was calculated based on the cultivation of vegetable whole year by the farmer. Collected data were edited, summarized, tabulated and analyzed to fulfill the objectives of the study. Descriptive statistics using different statistical tools like averages, percentages and ratios were used in presenting the results of the study.

Gher farming was the most important technology for agricultural development. It gives food, nutrition and money for the gher farmer. Most of the farmer was small farmer and maximum farmer has no or less own land, so they cultivate by leasing other land at very high cost. Gher farming was the tremendous impact on the food security of gher people. There had different cropping pattern at the gher agriculture. Though farmer cultivate year round vegetable there was no specific cropping pattern, but cropping was high. Farmers cultivate mostly relay cropping of different vegetable at gher dike. Most of the farmer full fills their daily necessity foods from gher dike vegetable and fish. It helps farmer for fight against food security. There were tremendous scope to increase the vegetable production by utilizing gher land with different relay vegetable.
