Production Program of Wheat Using Ash Under Drought Prone Area During 2016-17

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The production program was conducted at FSRD site Pushpopara, Pabna and Kustiapara village under MLT site Atghoria during the rabi season of 2016-17 to assess the performance as well as to disseminate use of rice husk ash for wheat cultivation at the farmers’ level. The average grain yield of BARI Gom-26 was recorded as 3.43 t ha^-¹from Pushpopara, Pabna and 4.2 t ha^-¹ from Atghoria.The farmers achieved satisfactory gross margin of Tk. 19272 ha^-¹from Pushpopara, Pabna and Tk. 35057 ha^-¹Atghoria against the total variable cost Tk.51043 ha^-¹.

Objectives:

To assess the field performance of rice husk ash management for wheat cultivation at the farmers’ level as well as to disseminate the technology.
To evaluate farmers’ response on ash management for growing wheat and economic return

Methodology:

Research managed demonstrations trial was conducted at FSRD site, Pushpopara, Pabna and MLT site, Atghoria, Pabna belonging to the AEZ 11 namely High Ganges River Flood Plain during the rabi season of 2016-17. Twelve co-operator farmers’ fields and about2.33 ha of land was selected for this program. The cooperator farmers were selected after a group discussion meeting organized by the scientists of OFRD, ARS, Pabna. Different inputs (Seed, fertilizers and fungicides) as well as information about modern crop management practices were shared through participatory approaches. The seeds of wheat (BARI Gom-26) were sown on 25-30 November, 2016. The seed rate of wheat was 120 kg ha^-1. The fertilizers were applied @ 82.97-27.56-20-21.51-2.52-2.55 kg N-P-K-S-Zn-B ha^-1along with 1.5 t ha^-1 rice husk ash. Total amount of all the fertilizers and rice husk ash except urea were applied during final land preparation. Urea was applied in two installments. Two-third urea was applied as basal and the remaining 1/3 was applied as top dress on 23-25 days after sowing (DAS). Weedicide 2-4-D was applied at 7 days after sowing to control Chenopodium album and weeding was done on 5 to 10 January.Irrigation was applied on 23 December, 2016. Two times spraying with Nativo was done one at the time of grain filling and second one after 7 to 10 days after first spray. The crop was harvested on 15 to 25 March, 2017.

Achievement/Findings:

Farmers opine that cultivation of BARI Gom-26 using ash shows better crop growth and increases yield. They also express their opinion that application of ash reduces diseases. The results encourage them to apply ash in their crop field next year.
