Lentil Production as Relay Crop with T. Aman Rice Under Changing Climate During 2016-17

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Research managed demonstration trial was conducted at f MLT site, Atghoria, Pabna during rabi season of 2016-17 at farmers’ fields. Primed seeds of lentil (BARI Masur-7) were sown as relay in T. aman rice field on 10 to 13 November, 2016. The seed rate of lentil was 55 kg ha^-1. The mean seed yield of lentil was 1660 kg ha^-1and economic return in terms of gross margin was estimated as 104730 Tk ha^-1.

Objectives:

To establish relay cropping of lentil as a potential technology under changing climate to reduce yield gap due to late planting and up scaling of the technology.

Methodology:

BARI developed improved variety BARI Masur-7 was demonstrated through block approach at MLT site, Atghoria, Pabna during rabi season, 2016-17. The total size of the demonstration plot was about 1.3 ha where six farmers were involved. The cooperative farmers were selected after a group discussion organized by OFRD, ARS, Pabna. Different inputs (Seed, fertilizers and fungicides) were supplied from OFRD, Pabna. The selected farmers received one day training on management of relay lentil production.The seeds of relay crops were sown on 10 to 13 November, 2016, 12 to 15 days prior to T. aman harvest. Seeds were soaked overnight in fresh water for seed priming. The seed rate of lentil was 55 kg ha^-1.The fertilizers were applied @ 37-08-20-13 kg N-P-K-S ha^-1. No weeding but three times fungicides (Rovral 50 WP) spraying were done starting at the beginning of flowering and continued at 7-10 days interval. The crop was harvested on 5 to 8 March, 2017. Data on yield and yield contributing characters were collected, compiled and presented in result section.

Achievement/Findings:

The cultivation of BARI Masur-7 through block approach created an excellent impact towards the large scale adoption of lentil in the farmers’ field. Being high yield potential and higher economic return, BARI Masur-7 itself has made its suitability for growing in the Lentil-Mungbean - T.Aman and Lentil-Jute-T.Aman cropping patterns. Farmers preserved large amount of seeds for wide area extension in the coming season. Due to technology intervention there is a chance to improve income and status of the farm family.
