Effect of Plant Growth Regulator on Growth and Development of Summer Tomato

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This study was evaluating the effect of different plant growth regulators on the growth and yield of BARI Hybrid Tomato 8 during the summer season. The experiment consisted of ten types of plant growth regulators (PGRs) viz. T₁₌Control (No application of plant growth regulators), T₂=25 ppm GA₃, T₃₌ 50 ppm GA₃. T₄₌ 100 ppm GA₃, T₅₌125 ppm GA₃, T₆= 0 ppm GA₃+ RD of Tomato tone, T₇₌ 25 ppm GA₃+ RD of Tomato tone, T₈₌ 50 ppm GA₃+ RD of Tomato tone, T₉₌100 ppm GA₃+ RD of Tomato tone and T₁₀= 125 ppm GA₃+ RD of Tomato tone were used in this experiment. The maximum plant height was observed from the treatment T₄ (120.1cm). The maximum number of fruits/plant (31.33), individual fruit weight (81.80 gm), as well as yield per hectare, was obtained from the plant which was treated with 50 ppm GA₃ (T₃) and Recommended dose of Tomato tone whereas the minimum was recorded from control plants.

Objectives:

To find out the effect plant growth regulator for growth and development of summer tomato.

Methodology:

Seeds of the Tomatoes under study were germinated on Olericulture seedbed with normal climatic conditions. Thirty days old seedlings were transplanted at the spacing of 60×40 cm on June 8, 2015. The land was fertilized with cow dung, N, P, K, S, Zn and B @ 1000,248,88,123,21,4.9 and 1.7 kg/ha respectively. Half of the quantity of cow dung, entire P, S, Zn, B and 1/3^rd of K were applied as basal dose during final land preparation. The remaining amount of the cow dung was applied in pit as basal dose and K in two equal installments as split at 15 and 30 days after transplanting. The entire urea was applied at three equal installments at 15, 30, and 45 days after transplanting. Irrigation, mulching, weeding, and other intercultural operation were done as and when necessary. Plant protections also done as and when necessary. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. GA₃ was applied in the form of foliar sprays at 30 days after transplanting and Tomato tone was sprayed on plants at anthesis stage. Moreover, due to transpiration spraying was performed early in the morning to avoid rapid drying of the spray solution.

Achievement/Findings:

The findings of the study showed that application of GA₃ at the rate of 50 ppm along with tomatotone (T₈) increased the fruit diameter, fruits per plant, individual fruit weight and fruit yield of BARI Hybrid Tomato 8. The present investigation is under trial in summer 2016 for further confirmation.
