Standardization of Planting Time and Harvesting Time on Yield of Broccoli

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at the research field of Olericulture Division, Horticulture Research Center, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur during the winter season of 2015-16 with a view to standardizing the planting time and as well as the suitable curd harvesting time. This was the two factor (Factor 1= 3 Planting time and Factor2= 3 harvesting time after curd initiation) three replicated trial compiled with RCB design. The material was used here is BAR Broccoli 1. The seedlings of the Broccoli when planted in 1^st October in the main field and harvesting was done the curd when attained 8 days after initiation (P₂H₁) give the highest yield (21.61t/ha). Whereas the lowest yield was obtained by the interaction of P₃H₂ (18.36t/ha). The findings of the study showed that planting on 1^st October with harvesting curd at 8,10 and12 days after curd initiation was found better in Broccoli cultivation.

Objectives:

To standardize the planting and harvesting time broccoli for its better improvement.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the research field of Olericulture Division, Horticulture Research Center, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur during the winter season 2015-2016. The variety which is used in this experiment was BARI Broccoli 1. The two-factor experiment includes Factor-A containing three planting time viz. P₁= planting on 15^th September, P₂= planting on 1^st October and P₃= planting on 15^th October in the main field; Factor-B includes three harvesting periods namely; H₁=Harvesting on 8 days after curd initiation, H₂=Harvesting on 10 days after curd initiation and H₃=Harvesting on 12 days after curd initiation. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with three replications. The unit plot size was 5 x 1m maintaining 50 x 40 cm spacing. The seeds were sown on seed bed on 20^th August, 10th September and 20^th September, 2015 and 30 days old seedlings were transplanted in the main field. The land was fertilized with cowdung-N-P-K-B-Mo @10t-240-150-220-2-1 kg/ha respectively. The entire quantity of cowdung, P, B, Mo was applied during final land preparation and one-third of N and K were applied during pit preparation. The remaining N and K were applied in 3 equal installments at 15, 30 and 45 days after transplanting. The intercultural operations such as weeding, irrigation etc. were done as and when necessary. Based on plant growth, curd weight, curd shape, size, compactness and curd colour 5 plants were selected from each replication. Data on different parameters such as days to 50% curd initiation, days to curd harvest, curd length (cm), curd breadth (cm), whole plant weight (g), only curd weight (g), marketable curd weight (g) curd yield (t/ha) were recorded and statistically analyzed.

Achievement/Findings:

Considering the findings of the study planting on 1^st October with harvesting time 8 days after curd initiation (P₂H₃) was found better in curd yield of broccoli cultivation. This experiment will be repeated for the confirmation of the result.
