Development of Micro Garden Model for Medium Size Urban Family Through Soilless Culture

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted on micro gardens for a medium-size urban family in the non-circulating system of soilless at the vegetable division, HRC, BARI, 2016. In the micro garden model, the Tomato per plant yield was 1.9 and 12 kg per plot. Capsicum 0.6kg per plant and 2.4 kg per plot, lettuce per plant yield 0.25 kg, bitter gourd per plant 2.2 kg, green chili per plant yield was .63, okra per plant yield .28, sweet potato per plant yield 0.27, red amaranth per unit area yield was 4.7kg and Indian spinach yield per plant was .3kg, strawberry per plant yield was 0.36kg and brinjal per plant yield was 1.04kg and mint leaf yield was 0.40kg per plant.

Objectives:

To develop a micro garden model using coco dust in soilless culture media.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted year-round at the plastic house of Olericulture Division, Horticulture Research Centre, BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur. The unit size of the garden was 10×10 square ft. The plants were grown in styrofoam box, plastic bucket, small steel tray, PVC pipe and hanging plastic bottle. According to season crops were planted in different types of growing container/box in coco dust and water media. Plants were fertilized with hydroponic nutrient solutions A and B. Which were previously prepared and store in a air tide big plastic container. The nutrient solution was applied at an interval of 2-3 days in coco dust. According to crop requirement, the Ec range is 1.5-2.5dS/m and pH range is 5.8-6.5.

The seeds of different crops were sown on Styrofoam. The foam was cut into 2.5 cm cube size, in the middle of the cube the seeds were sown after that foam was placed in a tray(60x80x25cm) containing 30L fresh water. A newspaper was placed over the Styrofoam to control the evaporation of water. After germination, the newspaper was removed. At two to three true leaf stages 10 to 20 cc nutrient solutions were added at an interval of 2 to 3 days. After 3 to 4 weeks the seedlings were transplanted in micro garden containers. The crops were harvested at the maturity stage from Oct.- Jun 2016.

Achievement/Findings:

From the micro garden model, 12 different types of crops were cultivated and their yield was satisfactory. Furthermore, the study will need more crops for confirmation of the results with the replicated trials.
