Observation Trial of Netted Melon Production in Hydroponics Culture

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Observation trial on the production of netted melon was conducted with netted melon variety AYESA in the non-circulating system of hydroponics culture at glasshouse of HRC, BARI. During 2015-16. It is revealed that the plant height of netted melon ranges from 185-225cm. Days to 1^st flowering rages from 43-51. Days to harvest varied from 85-90 days. No of fruits per plant was 1-3 fruit, the size of the fruit length varied from 11.2-17.4 and diameter was 10.5-15.2cm. Individual fruit weight ranges from 462-1020 g. The yield per plant was 470-1350g

Objectives:

To grow Netted melon round the year through hydroponics culture.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the glasshouse of Olericulture Division, Horticulture Research Centre, BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur, from March 2016 to June 2016. Plants were grown in steel tray (1x3x0.25m) sizes containing nutrient solution. The trays were connected with a tank through a plastic pipe. Nutrient solutions were circulating within the trays by an electric pump. Three different types of solutions were used in three different crops, EC and pH of those solutions were maintained separately at different growth stages. The seeds of Netted melon was sown on Styrofoam. The foam was cut into 2.5 cm cube size, in the middle of the cube the seeds were sown after that foam was placed in a tray (60x80x25cm) containing 30L fresh water. A newspaper was placed over the Styrofoam to control the evaporation of water. After germination, the newspaper was removed. At two to three true leaf stages 10 to 20 cc nutrient solutions were added at an interval of 2 to 3 days. After 3 to 4 weeks the seedlings were transplanted at spacing (30cmx50cm), in-tray the mixing of water and nutrient at 1:100 ratio Netted melon crop was planted in March 2016 and harvested unto June 20, 2016.

Achievement/Findings:

From the above trial, it was found that netted melon may be grown round the year in hydroponics culture. The experiment will be repeated in the next year with more than one variety and different planting times to find out optimum planting time and variety for year-round production of netted melon.
