Validation of Management Practice of Alternaria Blight of Mustard Through Adjustment of Sowing Time in Pabna

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field study was conducted at Madhupur village under FSRD site Pushpopara, Pabna during rabi season of 2012 - 2013 to evaluate the effect of sowing date on the yield and yield attributes of mustard. The variety BARI Sarisa 14 was tested with three sowing dates viz. 30 November, 10 December and 20 December. The sowing dates significantly affect the growth, development and yield of mustard. Mustard sowed on 30 November produced the maximum plant height (100.3 cm), number of siliqua plant^-1 (58.25) and seeds siliqua^-1 (38.18), 1000 seed weight (3.16 g) and seed yield (1.74 t ha^-1). Maximum diseases severity (4.20) and PDI (60.70) were observed in T₃ and minimum in T₁ with the values 2.10 and 21.60 respectively. Percent yield decreased over T₁ was also recorded. Comparatively low yield reduction (19.54%) was observed in T₂ and high (28.16%) in T₃ treatment.

Objectives:

To evaluate the effect of sowing date on the yield and yield attributes of mustard.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Madhupur village under FSRD site, Pushpopara, Pabna during rabi season of 2012-13 to assess the validity of sowing time adjustment against Alternaria blight of mustard. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with four replications. Three treatments i.e.T₁= sowing on 30/11/2012, T₂= sowing on 10/12/2012 and T₃= sowing on 20/12/2012 were employed in the trial. The unit plot size was 35 m². Seeds of BARI sarisha 14 were sown in line continuously in the field maintaining a distance of 40 cm from row to row. The fields were fertilized with 115-34-43-27-3-3 kg N-P-K-S-Zn-B respectively. All the fertilizers except urea were applied during final land preparation. Urea was divided into three equal amount of installments and 2/3 rd urea was applied as basal where as the rest 1/3 rd was applied as top dress on 02/01//2013 in T_1,10/01/2013 in T₂ and 20/01/2013 in T₃ respectively. Three times weeding were done on 20 December 2012, 05 January and 25 January, 2013 respectively to control dry land weeds. A pre sowing irrigation was done on 26/11/2012 to facilitate seed germination as the field lacks sufficient moisture. Later on the field was irrigated for two times dated on 30/12/2013 and 13/02/2013 respectively. The plants sown on 30/11/2012 that means T₁ were free from Alternaria blight as well as Aphid. Plants of T₂were partially infested with Aphid on the contrary remarkable Aphid infestation and less Alternaria infection were observed in T₃. Insecticide Sobicron and fungicide Rovral 50 wp were applied four times at 7 days interval on 22/01/2013, 29/01/2013, 04/02/2013 and 11/02/2013 respectively depending on pest prevalence. The crops were harvested on 01/03/2013, 06/03/2013 and 10/03/2013 following sowing date. All the relevant data were recorded carefully and analyzed statistically. Finally yield loss was also calculated as percentage. Leaf blight disease severity was recorded after last spray on the basis of 0-5 disease rating scale proposed by Meah [1992].

The Scales are as Follows:

0 = leaves free from leaf spot

1 = 0.1-6% leaf or pod area diseased

2 = 6.1% - 12% leaf or pod area diseased

3 = 12.1-25% leaf or pod area diseased

4 = 25.1% -50% leaf or pod area diseased

5 = Above 50% leaf or pod area diseased

Finally percentage of disease index (PDI) was computed using the formula below:

PDI= (Total sum of rating X 100)/ (Number of leaf counted X Maximum grade)

Achievement/Findings:

The yield of BARI Sarisha 14 was differed with different sowing dates. Early sowing contributed to the higher seed yield as compared to delay sowing. Besides yield variability, prevalence of pest infestation was increased with delay planting. So, significant yield can be obtained by maintaining proper sowing time through reducing pest infestation. This was the first year trial of the experiment; hence it should be repeated in the next year for further recommendation.
