Regional Yield Trial of Selected Semi-determinate Tomato Lines

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A regional yield trial of two selected semi-indeterminate type tomato lines with BARI Tomato 14 as check was conducted at the experimental field of Olericulture Division of Horticulture Research Centre (HRC), Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Gazipur during the winter season of the year 2015-16. The highest fruit yield per plant was recorded from BARI Tomato14 (4.62 kg) and the lowest yield was recorded from the line SL0107 (4.01 kg). The Maximum fruit yield per hectare (72.66 tons) was obtained from the line SL0101 and the lowest yield (69.31 tones) was recorded from the line SL0107. The lowest degree of virus infection was observed in BARI Tomato 14 (6.50%), while the highest (10.35%) virus infection was recorded from the line SL0107 at later stage of crop. Tomato fruit harvesting duration was ranged from 46-48 days.

Objectives:

To evaluate the performance of selected semi-indeterminate tomato lines at different to assess the adaptability and yield potentiality at different agro ecological zones of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the experimental field of Olericulture Division of HRC, BARI during winter season of 2015-2016. The selected (last year selection) two semi-indeterminate tomato lines viz.: SL0101 and SL0107 were selected for this study, while tomato varieties BARI Tomato 14 was used as check. The seeds of above mentioned lines and varieties were sown in the seedbed on 10 October, 2015. Thirty days old seedlings were transplanted in the main plot on 10 November; 2015. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with three replications having plot size of 4.8x1 m providing plant spacing of 60x40 cm. The crop was fertilized with cow dung 10 ton, N-253kg (urea- 550kg), P- 90kg (TSP-450kg), K-125 (MoP-250kg), S- 21kg (Gypsum-116kg), Zn-4.9kg (Zinc Sulphate-14kg) and B-2kg (12kg) per ha, respectively. Half of the quantity of cow dung, entire P and half of the K, entire zinc and boron were applied during land preparation. The remaining half of the cow dung was applied during pit preparation. The rest of K and entire N were applied at three equal installments at 15, 30 and 45 days after transplanting. Plant protection, irrigation and other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Data on yield and yield attributing parameters with qualitative traits were recorded from 20 inner plants of each plot escaping border plants following AVRDC guide line as below: Data on days to first flowering, days to 50% flowering, plant height at last harvest, days to maturity, harvesting duration, number of fruit /plant, average fruit weight, fruit length and diameter, pericarp thickness, number of locules per fruit, NTSS, fruit yield /plant, yield/ plot, yield /ha, number of seeds per fruit and percent of virus infestation (at 45 DAS, 60 DAS and 75 DAS) were recorded. The experiment was laid out in the randomized complete block design (RCBD) with 3 replications. Five treatment combinations were randomly allotted in each block. The size of a unit plot was 4.8m × 1m, and the plant spacing was 60cmx40cm. Each unit plot contained 2 rows of plants (24 plants/ plot). The recorded quantitative data were analyzed statistically by F-test to find out the variation due to different treatments. The collected data on aforementioned parameters were statistically analyzed as of Microsoft EXCEL software.

Considering the horticultural traits yield potentials the line SL0101 may be repeated as RYT to confirm the results and to assess the adaptability and yield potentiality at different agro ecological zones of the country for releasing as OP tomato variety.
