The study was conducted at Ghoshpara, Paulpara, Panchanypara, Puranpara, Bagbari and Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University (MBSTU) campus’s ponds of Santosh region under the Tangail district during April to November 2009 to find out the water quality parameters as well as types and sources for drinking water, irrigation and fish culture and also causes of water pollution, responsibilities and the management techniques by the local authorities of this region. The result of the study revealed that the average pH was 7.23, Transparency 17.75 cm, Dissolved Oxygen (DO) 6.18 mg/L, and Temperature ranged from 26.17oC to 29.33oC, Electric Conductivity (EC) and Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) with an average of 923.9 mmhos/cm and 609.8 mg/L respectively. The results of the study derived from the questionnaire survey from the local community people showed that 48% are using pond water, 33% using tube-well and the rest of 19% using other sources were such as canal water for their bathing and washing, 66% general fish culture and 34% others. The main causes for pond water pollution were 39% for fertilizer, 9% for pesticides, 13% for cow dung, 28% and 11% thought throwing of domestic wastages to the ponds those were causing 69% loss of biodiversity, and 20% extinction and 11% threatened to the aquatic ecosystems. It is expected that this study will be helpful to improve the production of fisheries, aesthetic value, biodiversity conservation and proper water management in this region.

  Tangail, Bangladesh

  Crop-Soil-Water Management
  Water quality, Fish

If the existing ponds are brought under semi-intensive fish culture through the education of farmers on it then the present rate of pond culture production can easily be increased to approximately 352,536 metric tones per annum that are 5 to 7 times of normal cultivation. It also mentioned that pond fish production could be increased 15 to 20 times by the introduction of a semi-intensive method of fish culture which is manageable with local resources and technology

Study area: The study was conducted from April to November 2009 in different ponds of Santosh which is situated at 24.27321 Latitude and 89.98182 Longitude which is 4 km far from Tangail town. This area is covering two wards (ward no. 07 and 08) with 3,471 households and 15,351 people of Tangail Sadar Pouroshava and the ponds are the main sources of daily animal protein to these local communities (BBS, 2011). The study included different ponds of Ghoshpara, Paulpara, Panchanypara, Puranpara, Bagbari and Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University (MBSTU) campus, situated at Santosh region of Tangail. Sample collection. The water samples were collected from Pir Shahjaman Dhigee, Rani Dhigee, Proja Dhigee, Girls’ School Pond and Trusty Board pond of MBSTU campus, Jannobi Pond, and Bagbari Pond of Bagbari area and also different ponds of Panchanypara, Puranpara, Paulpara and Ghosepara. The samples were collected two times a day (9.00 to10.00 am and 17.00 to 18.00 pm) in a one-month interval from the ponds of these areas. For the laboratory analysis samples were collected separately for each area in a dark 1000 ml DO bottle and preserved with 0.1N Hydrochloric Acid (HCl) and alkaline solution (KOH+KI). The field instruments were calibrated with pH 4.0 buffer solution after every reading and carefully adjusted to the standard reading. The sample DO bottles were also calibrated by 5% Nitric Acid (HNO3) and washed with distilled water. To assess the causes of the water quality alteration and prospects to develop for fish culture there are different methods used to collect data, such as Interviews, FGD, eyesight visitation, questionnaire, and secondary data. Simple random sampling was used for the primary data collection. Then these data were edited and rearranged in the form of qualitative data. The collected data ‘tabulated’ and ‘coded’. The MS Word, SPSS, and MS Excel used for data analysis. Table, graphs, maps, etc have been used for the presentation of findings.

The theme of this study was the effects of water quality, determination of pollution's impact on the aquatic environment for fisheries culture at Santosh region. The result was compared to the water quality parameters of the ECR, (1997) for Bangladesh. The study found the average pH 7.23, Transparency 17.75 cm, Dissolved Oxygen (DO) 6.18 mg/L, and Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) 609.8 mg/L respectively. Besides, there are 66% of ponds in these areas using for fish culture. The main causes of water pollution of these ponds were identified as fertilizer (39%), pesticides (9%), cow dung (13%), and 28% and 11% for chicken and domestic wastes to the ponds. The people perceived that these ponds were polluted causing a 69% decrease in fish production and 20% fish mortality and 11% threatened their aquatic ecosystems. It is expected that this study will be helpful to improve the production of fisheries, aesthetic value, biodiversity conservation, and proper management in this region. Although most of the parameters discussed are somewhat suitable for fisheries culture most of the people are nearby suffering from the effects of water pollution and the degradation of water quality is caused by types of sources. So there should some initiatives, like promoting public awareness and participation of general people to make them alert about water pollution, develop environmentally sound and enforceable environmental practices and alternative use of agro-chemicals, the establishment of latrine far from the water body, minimization of the throw of domestic organic wastes into the ponds, pond water should not link with the canal, river water, foster an integrated approach to water services delivery and water resource management, the farmer should not throw the agrochemical residues in the ponds could be taken to prevent pollution and improvement of water quality and ensuring a sustainable fisheries culture practice for the present and future generation.
