Field experiments on tomato (cv. BARI Tomato Lalima) were conducted in Chhiata series of the Grey Terrace Soil (Aeric Albaquept) under AEZ 28 at BARI Central Farm, Gazipur during the rabi seasons of 2002-2003, 2003-2004 and 2004-2005. The objectives were to find out the efficient organic manure in reducing the amount of chemical fertilizer from the conventional recommendation and to determine the optimum rates of chemical fertilizer and organic manure for maximizing the yield of tomato. Twelve treatments comprising different portions of the recommended dose (RD) of chemical fertilizers (N150 P45 K80 S25 Zn2 B1 kg ha-1) in combination with 4 levels of poultry manure (PM) (0, 2.5, 5 and 10 t ha-1) and 3 levels of cowdung (CD) (0, 2.5 and 10 t ha-1) were used in the study. Experiments were laid out in randomized complete block design with 3 replications. Poultry manure appeared as more efficient over cowdung in reducing the chemical fertilizer and also for maximizing the yield. Addition of 5 t PM ha-1 was found good enough to reduce 50% RD of chemical fertilizers. The highest mean yield (71.80 t ha-1) was obtained from T1 (100% RD + 2.5 t PM ha-1), which was statistically identical with T6 (50% RD + 10 t PM ha-1) and T5 (50% RD + 5 t PM ha-1) but significantly higher over rest of the treatments. Slight improvement in fertility status of soil was observed where poultry manure and chemical fertilizer were applied in integrated approach. The highest marginal rate of return (15285%) was obtained from T5 treatment. Considering the yield, economic benefit and soil fertility management aspects, the treatment T5 (50% RD + 5 t PM ha-1) may be recommended for the cultivation of Tomato in the study area.

1) To find out the response of tomato to chemical fertilizer and organic manure 2) To find out the efficient organic manure in reducing the amount of chemical fertilizer from the conventional recommendation 3) To determine the optimum rates of chemical fertilizer and organic manure for maximizing the yield of tomato.
Field experiments on tomato were carried out at BARI Central Farm, Gazipur during the rabi seasons of 2002-2003, 2003-2004 and 2004-2005.The soil belongs to the Chhiata series of the Grey Terrace Soil under AEZ-28. The fertility status of the initial soil was poor showing N, P, S and Zn below the critical level where as K was just at par. However, B status was medium and Mn, Fe and Cu level was higher. The Cowdung and poultry manure were analyzed in the laboratory and the nutrient contents have been presented in Table 1. There were 12 treatment combinations (Table 2) having 3 replications, which was arranged in randomized complete block design. The unit plot size was 3.0 m × 2.4 m. The tested variety was BARI Tomato-9 (Lalima). Tomato seedlings (25 days old) were transplanted in rabi season with a spacing of line to line 60 cm and plant to plant 45 cm. Urea, TSP, MP, Gypsum, Zinc oxide and Boric acid were used as the source of N, P, K, S, Zn and B, respectively. All P, K, S, Zn, B, CD, PM and 1/3 N were applied at the time of final land preparation and the remaining 2/3 N was applied in two equal installment each at 3rd and 5th weeks after transplanting. Irrigation and other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. The harvesting was done by picking the matured fruits and subsequent harvesting were tagged at random to take records on plant height, no. of fruits per plant and fruit weight per plant. Data on yield and yield contributing characters was recorded and statistically analyzed following IRRISTAT package. Particle size distribution of soil was done by hydrometer method, the textural class was ascettained using Marshals’s triangular co-ordinate and soil pH was measured with a combined glass calomel electrode pH meter. Exchangeable K and available P, S, Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn and B were analyzed following standard laboratory procedures.

Poultry manure @ 5-10 t ha-1 along with 50% recommended dose of chemical fertilizers (N75, P23, K40, S13, Zn1, B0.5 kg ha-1) appeared as the best suited combination in respect of yield sustainability and to maintain soil fertility in the study area in order to fertility management by enriching the soil with organic matter and turning the vegetable cultivation towards organic farming.
