Farmers Field Trial of Hydroponic Technology at Urban Area of Dhaka City

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted during winter 2015-2016 in the grower’s field in Dhaka. Four high-value horticultural crops namely, capsicum, tomato, cucumber and lettuce were selected for growing in hydroponic culture. Capsicum plant height ranges from 52.6-65.8 cm. The number of fruit per plant varied from 8-14. Fruit length was 13.7-16.5cm. Fruit diameter ranged from 4.5-5.2cm. The individual fruit weight ranges from 85.6-150.3g. The capsicum yield/ plant ranges from 550.5-902 g. Lettuce plant height range from 35.9-41.1cm. The number of leaves per plant was 23-27. Leaf length was varied from 13.2-18.2cm. Leaf breadth was varied from 6.3-9.9cm. Leaf weight varied from 3.4-4.8g and yield per plant range was 78.2-1248g. Tomato plant height range from 168-195cm. No. of fruit per plant varied from15-20. Fruit length was varied from 15-20cm. Fruit breadth was varied from 5,2-6.1cm. Fruit weight range from70-180g and yield per plant range from 1.1-3.6 kg. Cucumber plant height range from 125-141cm. No. of fruit per plant was 3-5. Fruit length was 10.2-12.5cm and fruit breadth was 3.4-5.3cm. The 3 crops (lettuce, capsicum and cucumber) showed higher fruit yield in a plastic bucket on hydrophonic ulture.

Objectives:

The experiment were under taken to determined the feasibility growing vegetable in growers field at urban area of Dhaka city.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at in grower’s field at Dhaka during December 2015 to May 2016. The study was set up in non - replicated trial in hydroponic culture. In hydroponic culture each bucket contains 10 liter water with 100ml nutrient solution A and 100ml nutrient solution B. After mixing nutrient solution Styro foam was placed upon plastic bucket. In each Styro foam having two holes, in one hole in the center for transplanting seedling and the other hole for aeration of oxygen. In each crop contain 5 bucket. BARI Mistimorich 1, BARI Tomato 14, Alavi and BARI Lettuce 1 were used as variety in the study. The seedling of capsicum, tomato, cucumber and lettuce were planted on December 2015 and harvesting up to May 2016. Data collection, nutrient solution adding and other necessary operations were done as and when necessary.

Achievement/Findings:

Four different types of crops (Capsicum, lettuce, tomato, cucumber) were cultivated and their yield was found satisfactory. The study will need further trial with more crops for conformation of the results with replicated trial.
