Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This study was performed to determine the prevalence of various diseases based on species, breed, sex and age of animals at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH), Bangabandhu Sheikh MujiburRahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU), Gazipur. The experimental data were recorded throughout the year from April 2019 to March 2020. According to the patient case record book and the data obtained from the designated vet doctors,737 patients (cattle 445, goat 214 and pets 78) were recorded for this survey. The collected data were compiled in MS Excel 2016 manually and analyzed. The highly prevalent diseases and disorders recorded were PPR (25.70%) in goat, LSD (20.67%) in cattle, parasitic infestations (15.96% in cattle, 15.38% in dog, 10.26% in cat and 8.88% in goat), anorexia (8.41% in goat and 8.31% in cattle). Among the surgical cases, castration was 11.21% in goat and 5.13% in the cat. Whereas, the ovariohysterectomy was 8.97% in dog and 6.40% in the cat.The results can be beneficial to execute more effective management and treatment of various diseases and will be supportive of the hospital authority to assure proper treatment and management facilities.

Objectives:

To estimate the prevalence of diseases, disorders and surgical cases in different animals (cattle, goat, dog and cat) broughtto the VTH, BSMRAU.

Methodology:

This study was carried out at the VTH of BSMRAU, Gazipur. The patients which were attended by the designated specialist veterinarians were also included in this study. In this study, a case was defined as a patient with history, clinical signs or lesions characteristic of specific diseases or cases; in some instances, there were supportive laboratory data from examination of pathological samples. One year (From April 2019 to March 2020) was considered as a study period for data collection in this study. The data were continuously recorded by the assigned specialist veterinarians and intern Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) students of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science (FVMAS) of BSMRAU. To understand the prevalence of different diseases, disorders and surgical cases, atotal of 737 established clinical patients (445 cattle, 214 goats and 78 pets) were considered in this study. Vaccination, deworming, feeding, housing and breeding consultations were excluded from the study. The clinical cases were divided into four major groups based on the given treatment by the specialist veterinarians. These groups were (1) Bacterial, viral and parasitic diseases, (2) Digestive and metabolic diseases, (3) Gynecological and obstetrical diseases and (4) Surgicalcases.We also focused on the species, breed, sex and age of patients in this present study. The VTH, BSMRAU was established in 2019, therefore, it is not well known to the rural beneficiaries. Most of the patients come from the adjacent areas of BSMRAU such as Naga, Salna, Shimultoly, Shantibag, Hatibag, Luxmipura, Porabari, Masterbari, Vurolia, Joydebpur, etc. Some critical patients were referred from Upazila Livestock Office and Veterinary Hospitals of different Upazila of Gazipur district.General, physical, clinical and laboratory examinations were performed for the diagnosis of diseases and disorders. Statistical Analysis- The obtained data were imported, stored and analyzed accordingly using Microsoft Excel-2016.The results were expressed in percentages.

Achievement/Findings:

Various diseases were recorded in farm animals (cattle, goat) and pets (dog, cat) in the Gazipur region of Bangladesh. Most of the animals were susceptible to bacterial, viral and parasitic infestation. Among them, LSD, FMD, and PPR were the most common diseases in the farm animals. The number of surgical and obstetrical cases was also remarkable in this study and pet practices are forthcoming service for this area. The findings of this study may act as a foundation for the nearby practitioners and researchers to identify the specific diseases and execute the best prevention and control program. Moreover, this study will be supportive of the hospital authority to assure proper treatment and management facilities to combat common diseases of livestock and pets.
