The experiment was conducted at Bahadurpur village under the Laksmanshri union of Sadar upazila of Sunamganj district during November 2014 to May 2015 to find out the effect of fertilizers on the yield of boro rice varieties in haor area. Two varieties (BRRI dhan29 and BRRI dhan58) and three fertilizer treatments (Farmers’ practice, BARC recommendation guide based fertilizers and Soil test based fertilizers) were included in the experiment. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with five farmers replications. Yield and yield contributing characters varied due to application of different fertilizer treatments. Higher number of effective tillers hill-1 (15.98) was produced by BRRI dhan58. The highest number of tillers hill-1 (17.48) was produced due to application of soil test based fertilizers. Panicle length varied significantly due to variety, fertilizers and their interactions. Panicle length was longer in BRRI dhan29 (22.91 cm). The longest panicle (22.28 cm) was produced in the plots due to application of BARC recommendation guide based fertilizers. Higher number of sterile spikelets panicle-1 (33.09), number of grains panicle-1 (156.57), 1000-grains weight (23.06 g), grain yield (9.21 t ha-1) and straw yield (10.87 t ha-1) was produced by the BRRI dhan58 compared to BRRI dhan29. The highest number of grains panicle-1 (171.19) was recorded due to application of soil test based fertilizer. The highest 1000-grain weight (24.42 g), grain yield (9.79 t ha-1) and straw yield (11.27 t ha-1) were obtained in BARC recommendation based fertilizers applied plots. The soil analysis showed that the nutrient contents in post-harvest soils were higher compared to initial soil.

The objective of the study to find out the effect of fertilizers on the yield of boro rice varieties in haor area.

The experiment was conducted at Bahadurpur village under the Laksmanshri union of Sadar upazila of Sunamganj district during November 2014 to May 2015. The site falls in the Sylhet Basin Agro- ecological zone (AEZ-21). The experiment included two factors, two varieties viz V1 (BRRI dhan29) and V2 (BRRI dhan58); and three fertilizer treatments viz. F1 (Farmers’ practice), F2 (BARC recommendation guide based fertilizers) and F3 (Soil test based fertilizers). The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with five farmers replications. The size of plot was 5 m × 6 m. Thirty five days old seedlings were transplanted in the experimented field. Block to block and plot to plot distance were 0.5 m and 0.5 m. Row to row and plant to plant distance were 20 cm and 20 cm, respectively. The experiment field was ploughed on 01 January, 2015 with the help of a power tiller, later on 03 January, 2015. The field was prepared by three successive ploughings and cross ploughings with a power tiller and subsequently leveled by laddering and fertilizers was applied with Farmers’ practice (180-42-42 kg ha-1 of Urea-TSP-MoP); Fertilizer recommendation guide (300-112-127-75-11 kg ha-1 of Urea-TSP-MoP-CaS04-ZnS04); Soil test based (265-175-134-35-4 kg ha-1 of Urea-TSP-MoP-CaS04- ZnS04), respectively. All the fertilizers were applied at the time of final land preparation but urea was applied at three equal splits at 15, 35 and 60 Days after transplanting (DAT). The layout of the field was made after final land preparation. The seedlings were uprooted on 4 January 2015 and they were immediately transferred to the main field. Rice was transplanted on 5 January 2015. Two hand weeding were done for each plot at 25 and 45 DAT, Standing water was maintained 2-3 cm in the field throughout the growing period. BRRI dhan58  was harvested  on 30 April 2015 and BRRI dhan29 was harvested on 5 May 2015. The harvested crop 1m2 areas at the center of each plot was separately bundled, properly tagged and then brought to threshing floor. The grains were cleaned and sun dried and straws were also sun dried properly. Finally grains and straw yields 1m2 plot-1 were recorded and converted to t ha-1. The initial and post-harvest soil samples were collected from 0-15 cm soil depth and analyzed. The recorded data were compiled and tabulated for statistical analysis. Analysis of variance was done with the help of computer package, MSTAT-C. The mean differences among the treatments were adjudged by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test.

Results of the experiment revealed that the variety BRRI dhan58 produced higher grain yield than BRRI dhan29, it supported by yield and yield contributing characters. It was also observed that post-harvest soils nutrients were higher in respect of initial soils where higher dose of fertilizer practice was applied. So, it could conclude that the variety BRRI dhan58 and fertilizer recommendation guide based fertilizers doses would be suitable for getting the higher boro rice production.
