Regional Yield Trial of Eggplant Lines for Summer (2016 – 2017)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study on the performance of four eggplant lines with the variety of BARI Begun 6, BARI Begun 8 (check) was conducted at the experimental farm of Olericulture Division, Horticulture Research Centre, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Gazipur, Bangladesh during the summer season of 2016 to develop new OP varieties having tolerance to fruit and shoot borer and bacterial wilt. Except the line SM217A, all the lines and varieties took maximum (105.33-107.67) days to first harvesting which were identical, while SM217A took minimum days (101.67). The highest marketable fruit number/plant was recorded from the line SM206 (51.66), while the lowest identical number were recorded from SM021, SM 181A and BARI Begun 6. The maximum fruit weight was obtained from BARI Begun 6 (130.33 g) followed by SM021, SM 181A and the lowest fruits weight / plant was observed from BARI Begun 8 (95.67 g). The longest fruit was recorded from BARI Begun 8 (22.96 cm) followed by SM17A while the shortest was from SM181A (4.80 cm). The highest fruit yield (t/ha) was recorded from SM206 (58.49 t) while others were produced identical lower yield (27.47-38.17 t/ha). At first harvest, the line SM021 showed tallest height (86.66 cm) followed by the others lines/ variety while BARI Begun 6 showed the shortest height (7.33 cm). At last harvest, the highest plant height was recorded from BARI Begun 8 while the lowest height was recorded from SM206 (106.0 cm). Maximum infestation by eggplant fruit and shoot borer was 18.52% was observed in BARI Begun 8, while minimum infestation was observed in SM2066 (7.05 %) and SM217A (8.48 %). The infection of BW (Bacterial wilt) mortality was 11.33 % and 10.66% from SM181A and BARI Begun 6, respectively. Considering earliness, higher yield, pest and diseases tolerance, the lines SM206 and SM217A were found promising. So these two lines may be repeated as RYT in next year.

Objectives:

The present study was undertaken to study the performance of the selected eggplant lines as well as to develop new OP varieties having tolerance to fruit and shoot borer and bacterial wilt.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the experimental farm of Olericulture Division, Horticulture Research Centre (HRC), Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Gazipur during the summer season of 2016. Four eggplant lines and variety BARI Begun 6, BARI Begun 8 (as check) were included in the study. The seeds were sown on the seedbed on March 15, 2016. Thirty days old seedlings were transplanted in the main field on April 14, 2016. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with three replications. The unit plot size was 7.5 x 0.70 m and 10 plants were accommodated in a plot with a plant spacing of 75 cm apart in single row maintaining a row to row distance of 1 m with 30 cm drain. The land was fertilized with cow-dung, N, P, K, S, Zn and B @ 10,000 100, 30, 75, 13, 1.5 and 0.8 kg/ha, respectively. One third of the cow-dung and half of P and full of S, Zn and B were applied during final land preparation. Rest of cow-dung and P and 1/3 of K were applied as basal in pit. Entire amount of N and rest of K were applied in four equal installment starting from 20 days after transplanting. The intercultural operations (weeding, irrigation, insecticide spray etc.) were done as and when necessary. Data on days to 1st harvest, days required for harvesting, fruit length (cm), fruit diameter (cm), marketable fruit number/ plant, average fruit weight (g), fruit weight/ plant (kg), yield (t/ha), eggplant fruit and shoot borer (EFSB) infestation (%), plant height at 1st harvest (cm) and plant height at last harvest (cm) were recorded from seven randomly selected plants per entry per replication. The information on different characters was statistically analyzed.

Achievement/Findings:

Considering earliness, higher yield, pest and diseases resistance, the lines SM206 and SM217A were found promising. So, these two lines may be repeated as RYT in next year.
