Regional Yield Trial of Multiple Disease Tolerant Avrdc Tomato Lines (2016 – 2017)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted with five selected Lines and a check (AVTO1218, AVTO1228, AVTO1229, AVTO1316 and AVTO1317 with BARI tomato 15 as check) at the experimental field of Olericulture Division, Horticulture Research Centre, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Gazipur during the winter season of 2016-17, to assess the yield potentiality, and adoptability and at different agro ecological zones of Bangladesh. Significant variation was observed among the lines in respect of different characters studied. A wide range of variation in number of fruits per plant was observed. Maximum fruit yield per plant and per hectare obtained from the line AVTO1229 (3.53 kg/plant; 106.02 t/ha) followed by AVTO1316 (3.49kg/plant; 104.63t/ha) and AVTO1317 (3.32kg/plant;99.50t/ha). There was no virus infestation in all the lines except BARI Tomato 15. The line AVTO1316, AVTO1229, AVTO1317, AVTO1218 andAVTO1228 were showed virus tolerant and also high yielder, For further study may be recommended for confirmation of the results.

Objectives:

To evaluate the performance of the selected tomato lines at different agro ecological zones of Bangladesh with a view to develop new variety(s) with desirable traits.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the experimental field of Olericulture Division, HRC, BARI during the winter season of 2016 -17. Thirteen tomato lines were collected from AVRDC as experimental materials. From these lines, five were selected for regional yield trial since the previous year. The seeds of above mentioned lines were sown in the seedbed on October 19, 2016. Thirty days old seedlings were transplanted in the main plot. The experiment was laid out RCB design with three replications having plot size of 4.8 x 1 sq m providing a spacing of 60x40 cm. The crop was fertilized with cow dung 10 ton, urea 550kg, TSP 450kg and MoP 250kg per ha, respectively. Half of the quantity of cowdung, entire TSP and half of the MoP were applied during final land preparation. The remaining half of the cowdung was applied during pit preparation. The rest of MoP and entire urea were applied at three equal installments at 15, 30 and 45 days after transplanting. Irrigation, pruning, mulching weeding, plant protection and other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Data on days to 50% flowering, plant height at last harvest, days required for first harvest, fruit length, diameter, number of fruit per plant, individual fruit weight, fruit yield per plant, TSS (%), number of seeds per fruit and percent of virus infestation were recorded. The collected data on aforementioned parameters was statistically analyzed (Gomez and Gomez, 1983).

Achievement/Findings:

Considering the plant growth habit, flowering, virus infection, late blight infection and quantitative traits, five lines viz. AVTO1316, AVTO1229, AVTO1317, AVTO1218 and AVTO1228 considered as promising. All these AVRDC lines may be evaluated for further study.
