A regional yield trial (RYT) with four selected processing tomato lines with check BARI Tomato 3 was conducted at the experimental field of Olericulture Division of Horticulture Research Centre (HRC), Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Gazipur during the winter season of 2016-17, to assess the yield potentiality, processing quality and adaptability. Satisfactory fruit yield per plant was recorded from the all lines which were ranged from 2.39 to 3.56 kg. The highest fruit yield per hectare was obtained 67.31 tons from the line AVTO 01139 followed by AVTO 01008 (63.61 tones). Virus infection percentage was nil in the experiment field. One of the main criteria of processing tomato is viscosity, which was ranged from 2.50 to 3.70 Cp in processing tomato lines while highest value (7.05 Cp) showed in BARI Tomato 3 and the line AVTO 1139 exhibited lower value (3.70 Cp) that indicted the higher vesicant line. The line AVTO01139 was found better in respect of yield, virus resistant and processing quality (viscosity). Meanwhile, the line AVTO01139 has been released as BARI Tomato 19 mentioning first ever processing tomato variety released by BARI. Others line are also promising. Therefore, these lines may be maintained for further improvement of processing tomato varieties.

To evaluate the performance of AVRDC supplied processing tomato lines to develop new processing tomato variety for Bangladesh.

The experiment was carried out at the experimental field of Olericulture Division of HRC, BARI during the winter season of 2016-2017. The AVRDC/WVC supplied four processing tomato lines viz.: AVTO 01008, AVTO 01010, AVTO 01132, AVTO 01139 and BARI Tomato 3 (as check) were considered as the materials for this study. The experiment was laid out in the randomized complete block design (RCBD) with 3 replications. Five treatment combinations were randomly allotted in each block. The size of a unit plot was 4.8 m × 1m, and the plant spacing was 60x40cm. Each unit plot contained 2 rows of plants (24 plants/ plot). The seeds of above mentioned lines and varieties were sown in the seedbed on October 21, 2016. Thirty days old seedlings were transplanted in the main plot on November 21, 2016. The crop was fertilized with cow dung 10 ton, N-253 kg (urea-550 kg), P- 90kg (TSP-450kg), K-125 (MoP-250kg), S-21kg (Gypsum-116kg), Zn-4.9kg (Zinc Sulphate-14kg) and B 2kg (12kg) per ha, respectively. Half of the quantity of cow dung, entire P and half of the K, entire zinc and boron were applied during land preparation. The remaining half of the cow dung was applied during pit preparation. The rest of K and entire N were applied at three equal installments at 15, 30 and 45 days after transplanting. Gap filling, plant protection, irrigation and other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Data on yield and yield attributing parameters with qualitative traits were recorded from 20 inner plants of each plot escaping border plants following AVRDC guide line as follows: data on days to first and 50% flowering, plant height at last harvest, days to maturity, number of fruit per plant, average fruit weight, fruit length and diameter, fruit yield per plant, yield per plot, yield /ha, number of seeds per fruit, shelf life, percent virus infection (at 45 DAS, 60 DAS and 75 DAS), viscosity, (measured following Bost wick consist meter method USDA, 1991, acidity and other processing quality were recorded. The recorded quantitative data were analyzed statistically by F-test to find out the variation due to different treatments. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and treatment means were compared by Least Significant Difference (LSD) test following R Software 3.1.2 (Anon., 2015).

Considering the yield, horticultural and quality traits, the line AVTO 01139 may be recommended for releasing as processing tomato variety and may also be suggested to grow in different agro-ecological zones of Bangladesh. The line AVTO 01139 have already released as BARI Tomato 19 in March, 2017). The other lines may be maintained for further improvement of the processing tomato varieties.
