Length–weight and Length–length Relationships of Five Fish Species in the Atrai River, Dinajpur, Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A total of 502 specimens were obtained during monthly samplings from July to December 2015, by fishermen using seine nets, gillnets and cast nets. Length–weight (LWRs) and length–length (LLRs) relationships were estimated for five fish species collected from the Atrai River in the northwestern region of Bangladesh. The values of slope (b) in LWRs (r2 > .913, p < .001) were determined as 2.899 for Aspidoparia jaya, 3.059 for Gagata cenia, 3.004 for Gagata youssoufi, 2.755 for Salmophasia bacaila, and 3.222 for Salmophasia phulo, respectively. The linear relationships in TL, FL and SL were highly correlated (for all cases: r² > .897, p < .001). No previous information on LWRs (except for G. cenia) and LLRs (except for S.bacaila) of these selected species were found in Fish Base.

Objectives:

The aim of this study was commenced in order to estimate the length–weight and length–length relationships for five small, indigenous fish species

Methodology:

The study was carried out in the Atrai River (25.924°N; 88.724°E), Dinajpur, Bangladesh, where a total of 502 individuals of five fish species in three genera were captured by fishermen using different fishing gear, i.e., seine net (50 × 12 ft2, 4 mm), gillnet (40 × 3 ft2, 15 mm) or cast net (12 × 22 ft2, 8 mm) on a monthly basis from July to December 2015. The samples were identified in the field, based on their morphological characteristics following Talwar and Jhingran (1991) and Rahman (2005). The identified and sorted species were immediately (within 1.5 hrs) transported in an icebox to the laboratory of Fisheries Biology and Genetics. Total length (TL), standard length (SL) and fork length (FL) were gauged with the help of a vernier caliper to the nearest 0.1 cm, body weights (BW) were measured with a digital balance (HD- 602ND, MEGA, Japan) to the nearest 0.1 g for each fresh individual. Lastly, the fishes were preserved in 10% buffered formalin solution. Length-weight relationships (LWRs) were calculated through logarithmic transformation of the linear regression equation as log BW = log a + b log TL of the power function (BW = a TLb), where BW is the weight (g), TL is the total length (cm) of fishes, a is the intercept and b is the slope of regression curve. The log-log plots for LWRs were exploited to eliminate the outliers (Froese, 2006) and the degrees of association between variables were computed by the coefficient of determination (r2). Length–length relationships (LLRs) such as TL versus SL, FL versus SL and FL versus TL were calculated by the linear regression equation similar to LWRs (Zare, Moodi, Masudinodushan, & Abdoli, 2011). All statistical analyses were done using spss version 20.0 (IBM Corporation, Chicago, IL).

This investigation of LWRs and LLRs can be considered as baseline data providing useful information for future studies regarding these small fishes in the northwest region of Bangladesh.
