Evaluation of New Avrdc Tomato Germplasm (2016 – 2017)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment on evaluation of tomato germplasm was conducted at the experimental field of Olericulture Division of Horticulture Research Centre (HRC), Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Gazipur during the winter season of 2016-17 with 15 AVRDC/WVC supplied tomato lines for selecting superior lines and seed increasing. All the lines showed different performance in every parameter studied. The line SL0307 contributed the highest per plant yield (4.14 kg) with good shelf life (19 days). The tomato lines SL0301, SL0303 (2), SL0308 (1) and SL0311 showed more than 3.00 kg yield per plant. The lines- SL0301, SL0303 (1), SL0304, SL0307, SL0308 (1), SL0303 (2), SL0311 and SL0313 found to be promising. Neither virus nor bacterial wilt observed to infect in the tomato lines. Four lines viz. SL0303 (1), SL0304, SL0303 (2) and SL0313 considered to be potential line for heat tolerance as noticed by the WVC (are being evaluated this summer season seed sown on May15, 2017). Rest of three lines may be put into PYT/AYT in winter season.

Objectives:

To evaluate the performance of the collected tomato germplasm for selecting superior lines and seed increasing.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the experimental field of Olericulture Division of HRC, BARI during winter season of 2016-17. There were 15 tomato germplasm collected from AVRDC/WVC (Inbreed line developed by AVRDC incorporated different resistant gene against pest and diseases) included for this study. The experiment was laid out in non-replicated design having plot size of 4.8X1 m providing plant spacing of 60 x 40 cm. The seeds of above mentioned lines were sown in the seedbed on October 22, 2016. Thirty days old seedlings were transplanted in the main plot on November 22, 2016. The crop was fertilized with cow dung-10 ton, N-253 kg (urea-550 kg), P-90 kg (TSP-450 kg), K-125 (MoP-250 kg), S-21 kg (Gypsum-116 kg), Zn-4.9 kg (Zinc Sulphate-14 kg) and B-2 kg (12 kg) per hectare, respectively. Half of the quantity of cow dung, entire P and half of the K, entire zinc and boron were applied during land preparation. The remaining half of the cow dung was applied during pit preparation. The rest of K and entire N were applied at three equal installments at 15, 30 and 45 days after transplanting. Irrigation, pruning, mulching, weeding and other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Plant protection, irrigation and other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Data on days to first flowering, days to 50% flowering, plant height at last harvest, days required for first harvest, fruit length, diameter, number of fruit per plant, individual fruit weight, fruit yield per plant, NNTSS, number of seeds per fruit, shelf life and percent virus infestation were recorded. Other qualitative characters as per descriptor also recorded. The collected data on aforementioned parameters was statistically analyzed (Zaman et al., 1982) as of Microsoft Excel program.

Achievement/Findings:

Considering the plant growth habit, flowering trends and other horticultural traits, the lines SL0301, SL0303 (1), SL0304, SL0307, SL0308 (1), SL0303 (2), SL0311 and SL0313 may be selected for preliminary yield trial or advance yield trial in the next year. These lines have been divided into two groups (Summer: SL0303 (1), SL0303 (2), SL0304 and SL0313; Winter: SL0301, SL0307, SL0308 (1) ). It may be mentioned here that the heat tolerant lines are being evaluated in summer season of 2017 for assessing heterosis and combining ability at high temperature condition.
