Graft Compatibility and Yield Potentials of Newly Developed Bt Brinjal Varieties on Cultivated Solanum Rootstock

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Graft compatibility and yield potentials of newly developed Bt Brinjal varieties on cultivated solanum rootstock were conducted at RHRS, Shibpur, Narsingdi during the winter season of 2017-2018. The commercial cultivation of four Bt-Brinjal varieties viz. BARI Bt Begun-1, BARI Bt Begun-2, BARI Bt Begun-3 and BARI Bt Begun-4 which were grafted on two rootstocks viz. BARI Begun 8 and BARI Begun 10. The non-grafted Bt Brinjal varieties are termed as control. Maximum plant height 55.88 cm was found in Bt- Begun 2 and minimum 36.11 cm in combination effect of rootstock BARI Begun 8 grafted with BARI Bt Begun 3. Maximum fruit length, fruit breadth and individual fruit weight were found in control treatment BARI Bt Begun 4. Whereas a number of fruits per plant maximum were found in Bt Begun 2 grafted with rootstock BARI Begun 10. The main combination effect showed that bacterial wilt disease incidence was reduced significantly on the grafted plant. Maximum 38.10% bacterial wilt disease incidence was found in control rootstock BARI Bt Begun 3. But all controlled treatments such as BARI Bt Begun 1, 2, 3, 4 were found more susceptible in bacterial wilt than grafted plants. The rootstock of BARI Begun 8 showed better performance than BARI Begun 10 against wilting because this variety is more resistant to bacterial wilt. Maximum yield per plant 3.35kg, yield per plot 23.51kg and yield per hectare 22.38 t/ha were found in BARI Bt Begun 2 grafted with rootstock BARI Begun 10.

Objectives:

To tested new Bt-brinjal by grafting on cultivated solanum for compatibility and yield.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at RHRS, Shibpur, Narsingdi during the winter and summer seasons of 2017-2018. The commercial cultivation of four Bt-brinjal varieties viz. BARI Bt Begun-1, BARI Bt Begun-2, BARI Bt Begun-3 and BARI Bt Begun-4 which were used scion and grafted two rootstocks BARI Begun 8 and BARI Begun 10. The experimental field was evaluated of RHRS, Shibpur, Norsingdi. The experiment was laid out in RCBD. The unit plot size was 7.0 ´ 1.0 sq.m. Scion seed was sown 20 October in seedbed and rootstock seed was sown before 5 days of the scion. After 26daysgrafting was done on 15/11/2017. 98 -100% Percent of grafting is successful. After 20 days grafted plant and control seedling was transplanted into the main field on 5th December with a spacing of 1.00 ´ 0.70 m. Manure and Fertilizers were applied at the rate of cowdung 5 t/ha, N 138 kg/ha, P 40 kg/ha, K 100 kg/ha, S 18 kg/ha, Zn 3.6kg/ha and B 1.7 kg/ha. Half of cowdung was applied during final land preparation. The remaining half of the cowdung, the entire amount of phosphorus, sulphur, zinc and boron were applied in the pit before one week of transplanting of seedlings. Nitrogen and potassium were applied in three equal splits at 20, 40 and 60 DAT as ring method around the plants and mixed thoroughly. Irrigation and other intercultural operation were done as and when necessary. Admire was sprayed @ 0.5ml/L alternately at the seedling stage to control whitefly in some heavily infested plot. Data were recorded on days to 50% flowering, plant height, number of fruits per plant, fruit length, fruit breadth, Plant shoot length, root length, yield per plant and per hectare. The data were analyzed statistically to assess the result.

Achievement/Findings:

This is the only winter performance of second year data on graft compatibility and yield potentials of newly developed Bt-brinjal varieties on cultivated solanum rootstock. The experiment need to be repeated for confirmation of the results.
