Effect of Containers and Vermi-compost on Tomato Under Roof-top Gardening

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was carried out at Olericulture Division under HRC, BARI to find out the suitable container and vermi-media for growing tomato (BARI Tomato -15) for rooftop gardening during October 2017 to March 2018. The single factor study was using three types of pot namely, plastic, earthen and plastic bag in combination with vermi-media like,0. 25,50 and 75 percent vermicompost (% weight basis) mixed with soil following RCB design with 3 replications. It was observed that the plastic pot and the plastic sac are suitable for tomato production. Considering combined effect the plastic pot with 50 % vermicompost + 50 % soil and plastic sac with 75 % vermicompost + 25 % soil was suitable combinations for tomato production under roof gardening.

Objectives:

To find out the suitable container with an effective level of vermicompost level for tomato production under rooftop gardening.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at Olericulture Division under HRC, BARI to find out the suitable container and vermimedia for growing tomato for the rooftop gardening during October 2017 to March 2018. The two factor experiment was laid out in Randomize Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Factor A was a container, namely; plastic, earthen and plastic sac, and factor B was four levels of vermicompost viz., 0,25, 50 and 75 percent (% weight basis) mixed with soil. Seeds of tomato variety, BARI Tomato 15 were sown on 25 October, 2017, and double transplant of seedlings was carried out of 2 true leaves stage. The 30 days old seedlings were transplanted into a plastic pot, earthen pot, and plastic sac almost equal in size (27 × 17 cm) contained around 12 kg of media on 25 November 2017. To prepare the treatments, containers were filled with a mixture of soil and the half amount each of the vermicompost dose at 7- 10 AM of seedling transplanting day, moistened adequately, and in the afternoon seedlings were transplanted. The remaining amounts of vermicomposts were equally divided into two portions; one portion was applied at 21 days after transplanting and second was at 35 days after transplanting as a top dressing. Moisture was maintained by drenching to the containers as and when required. Neem extracts were applied 2 times of 15 days interval instead of chemical pesticide application. Three branches were maintained by removing all extra side shoots. Data were recorded on days to 1^st harvest, plant height (cm), number of fruits per plant, individual fruit weight (g), fruit length (cm), fruit breadth (cm), total soluble solids (TSS%), yield/plant (kg) and analyzed statistically.

Achievement/Findings:

From the result, it may be concluded that as a container plastic pot and plastic sac is suitable for tomato production. Moreover, 50 % vermicompost + 50% soil is a good combination for tomato production under rooftop gardening. Considering combined effect the plastic pot with 50 % vermicompost + 50 % soil and plastic sac with 75 % vermicompost + 25 % soil is a suitable combination for tomato production for roof gardening.
