Performance of BARI Released Tomato Varieties at Northern Region During Late Winter

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study on the performance of BARI released tomato varieties during late winter was carried out at HRC, BARI Gazipur during late winter 2017-18 cropping season to compare the performance of BARI released tomato varieties with farmer’s collected hybrid tomato lines. Eight tomato varieties/lines were included for comparison. The varieties/lines were: BARI Hybrid Tomato 8, BARI Hybrid Tomato 10, BARI Tomato 15, BARI Tomato 16, NS 501, NS 538, Tomato 1389 and Bipul plus in a RCB design with three replications. The study revealed that number of flowers in 2^nd cluster was higher in BARI hybrid tomato 8 (8.47) followed by Tomato 1389(7.67). BARI Tomato 15 was late in terms of 50% flower initiation. Number of fruits per plant was higher in followed be BARI Tomato 16 (51.23), BARI hybrid tomato 10 (46.67) and Bipul plus (42.73). Fruit yield was recorded the highest in BARI hybrid tomato 8 (18.67 t/ha) and BARI hybrid tomato 10 (18.58 t/ha), followed by Bipul plus (15.33 t/ha). From the study, it was also clear that BARI hybrid tomato 8 and BARI hybrid tomato 10 were higher yielders compare to hybrid tomato Bipul plus during late winter. However, Bipul plus was superior over the rest of the tested tomato varieties/lines, which are the most preferred hybrid tomato lines cultivated mostly by the farmers of the northern region of Bangladesh.

Objectives:

To assess performance of BARI released tomato varieties along with the hybrids/ OP tomatoes at northern region of Bangladesh during late winter.

Methodology:

The study was carried out at HRC, BARI Gazipur during late winter 2017-18 cropping season in order to compare the performance of BARI released tomato varieties with farmers collected tomato lines at northern region of Bangladesh. In the northern part of Bangladesh, one set of this experiment was placed at Toner hat Panchogar but at fruiting stage two times sever hill storm damage the experiment. So, we could not record any information from that part. Eight tomato varieties/lines were included for comparison. The varieties/lines were: BARI hybrid tomato 8, BARI hybrid tomato 10, BARI Tomato 15, BARI Tomato 16, NS 501, NS 538, Tomato 1389 and Bipul plus. The experiment was laid out in a RCB design with three replications. Seeds of those tomato varieties were sown in 04 January, 2018 and the seedlings were transplanted in 15 February 2018. The unit plot size was 3.2m x1m. Plant spacing was maintained 60 cm x40 cm and with this relation there were 16 plants in each replication. The whole experimental plot was manures and fertilized at the rate of cow-dung 10 ton, urea 550kg, TSP 450kg, MoP 250kg, gypsum 121kg, boric acid 12kg and zinc sulphate 15kg per hectare. Half of cow-dung, the entire amount of TSP, boric acid, gypsum, and 1/3 of MoP were applied during final land preparation. The remaining ½ of cow-dung were applied in pit. The whole amount of urea and rest 2/3 of MoP were applied in 3 equal splits at 20, 40 and 60 days after transplanting. All necessary plant protection measures were taken by spraying Malathion and Diethene M-45. Necessary support was provided for protecting the plant from lodging. Harvestable fruits were harvested at a weekly interval. Data were taken on days to 50% flowering, days required for 1^st harvest, number of fruits per plant, disease and insect reactions, number of locule per fruit, fruit size, individual fruit weight and yield of tomato. Data on whitefly and leaf minor were also recorded from five middle leaves by visual count from each plant and 10 plants from each replication. Fruit borer infestation was recorded during harvest at a weekly interval. On the other hand, data on TLCV was recorded at last harvest. Data were analyzed statistically and furnished in the tables.

Achievement/Findings:

From the above findings it could be summarized that BARI hybrid tomato 8 and BARI hybrid tomato 10 were out yielded (18-19 t/ha) among the tested tomato varieties/lines. So, two varieties may be the most preferred variety for activating during late winter.
