Regional Yield Trial of Pumpkin (2016 – 2017)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A regional yield trial of four pumpkin genotypes were evaluated with a check variety BARI Mistikumra 2 in the Olericulture Division, HRC, BARI, Gazipur during the winter season of 2016-17 to study the regional adaptability and yield potentiality. The genotypes varied significantly for their response of some characters studied (P<0.05), such as days to 1st female flower (DFF), node number to 1st female flower (NFF), flesh thickness (FL), average fruit weight (AvFwt.), fruits per plant, yield per plant and yield (ton/ha). The yield ranged from 11.1 to 21.8 t/ha. All the genotypes including check were not performed better due to late sowing. The genotypes were not in homozygous condition, so the inconsistences were observed in data. Based on the character studied and visual observation the genotypes were not suitable for regional yield trial. Therefore, the study may be repeated after purification of the genotypes and it may be purified in regional research station.

Objectives:

To evaluate the performance of selected pumpkin lines with high yield, better quality and wide adaptability across the country.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the research farm of Olericulture Division, HRC, BARI, Gazipur during the winter season of 2016-17. The trial consisted of four advance pumpkin lines (CMPK 09, CMPK 10, CMPK 18 and CMPK 22) and BARI Mistikumra 2 as check. The trial was established in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Each replication comprised of five plants. Seeds were sown in poly bag on January 08, 2017. The unit plot size was 2.0 × 10 m maintaining 2 × 2 m plant spacing within the bed. Fifty centimeter drain was kept between the plots. The land was fertilized with cowdung, urea, TSP, MoP, gypsum, zinc sulphat and borax @ 10000, 175, 175, 150, 12 and 10 kg/ha respectively. Total amount of cowdung, TSP, gypsum and zinc and 1/3^rd of MoP were applied during pit preparation. The rest of MoP was applied in two equal installment at 10 and 20 days after transplanting. Urea was applied in four equal installments at 7, 20, 40 and 65 days after transplanting. The intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Eight quantitative and qualitative characters were studied such as, days to 1^st male flower (DMF), days to 1^st female flower (DFF), node number to 1^st male flower (NMF), node number to 1^st female flower (NFF), fruit length (FL), fruit diameter (FD), fruits/plant, average fruit weight (AvFwt.), yield/plant, yield/ha, flesh thickness (Fl. thick) and total soluble solid in percent (TSS). Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and mean separation of genotypes were done using LSD test by Statistix 10 statistical software.

Achievement/Findings:

The genotypes may be purified in regional research station. It is recommended that the genotypes were not appropriate for regional yield trial. It may be purify in regional research station for inbred line.
