Evaluation of Sponge Gourd Genotypes (2016 – 2017)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at Olericulture Division, HRC, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Gazipur during the summer season of 2016 to evaluate the performance of six sponge gourd genotypes. The genotypes were BD 2362-1, BD 2363-4, BD 2364-1, BD 2369-1, BD 2380-3 and BD 2382-3. Earlier male and female flower opening were not significant variation among the genotypes but the lowest node order for male and female flower was found in genotypes BD 2369-1. Days to 1st harvest were statistically similar in all genotypes. Number of fruits per plant was produce maximum (41) in BD 2362-1 minimum from BD 2382-3 (26). The heaviest, longest and robust fruits was produced by the genotypes BD 2382-3 (255g, 27.30 cm and 4.76 cm) respectively. Yield ranged from 25.51 to 33.54 t/ha. BD 2364-1 -1 (33.54 t/ha), BD 2362- (30.58 t/ha) and BD 2363-4 (28.98 t/ha) produce the maximum yield rest genotypes gave minimum yield (25.51 to 25.86 t/ha). All genotypes showed better performance in respect of number of fruits/plant, fruit length, fruit diameter, yield (t/ha) and some other characters so above all lines may considered for next year advance yield trial.

Objectives:

To study the performances of selected six sponge gourd lines.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the experimental field of Olericulture Division, HRC, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Gazipur during the summer season of 2016. The seeds of six selected sponge gourd genotypes viz, BD 2362-1, BD 2363-4, BD 2364-1, BD 2369-1, BD 2380-3 and BD 2382-3 were sown on the polybag on 18 May, 2016. Nineteen days old seedlings were transplanted in the main field on 06 June, 2016. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with three replications. The unit plot size was 10 m x 1.0 m having single row and 5 plants per plot. The seedlings were transplanted maintaining 2.0 x 1.0 m spacing. The unit plot and blocks both were separated by 60 cm respectively. Thus 3900 plants were accommodated in one hectare area. The land was fertilized with cowdung, N, P, K, S, Zn and B @ 10000, 80.65, 35.00, 75.00, 18.00, 4.30 and 1.70 kg/ha, respectively. One third of the cowdung and half of P and full of S, Zn and B are to be applied during final land preparation. Rest of cow-dung and P and 1/3 of K were applied as basal in pit. Each of N and K @ 50 kg/ha applied after 20 days of transplanting. After that, rest of N and K in 3 and 2 equal installments respectively applied at 20 days interval. The intercultural operations (weeding, irrigation, insecticide spray etc.) were done as and when necessary. Data on days to 1^st male flower open, days to 1^st female flower open, node order of 1^st male flower open, node order of 1^st female flower open, days to 1^stharvest, duration of harvest, number of fruits per plant, individual fruit weight (g), yield (kg/plant), fruit length (cm) and fruit diameter (cm) were recorded from each plants per entry per replication. The information on different characters was statistically analyzed.

Achievement/Findings:

Considering number of number of fruits/plant, fruit length and diameter, yield/plant characters all genotypes BD 2362-1, BD 2363-4, BD 2364-1, BD 2369-1, BD 2380-3 and BD 2382-3.were found more promising. However, six lines have been considered for next year trial. A varietal development programme may taken using above six genotypes.
